Okay, so this is my first post on here but I have been scanning these pages for like 3 months now. I've wanted dreads for a while and finally talked the hubby into backcombing my SERIOUSLY damaged hair 3 weeks ago. I started weaning my hair off of shampoo about 2 months now, made my own, tried baby shampoo, but I have been using Bronner's tea trea(diluted) since dreading. For the past week my scalp has been really flaking up!! The other night I used baking soda, peppermint tea and ACV to try to help it but it's just getting worse. PLEASE help!!!!

BTW - This forum has basically been my bible since I decided to dread so Thank you all - without you I would have probably been led astray by all those Other Dreadsites... WAX- Ugh...

welcome to the forum. personally, and this is just me, i'm not a fan of the liquid bronners, i feel that bars get me feeling much cleaner so i usually use that over the liquid. but anyway i see you are in new jersey, so i assume there is probably a shoprite around where you live. they carry a tea tree bar that is absolutely fucking amazing. i dont know the brand but i have to go there tomorrow to pick up a few things and i need a new bar anyway so i'll post tomorrow afternoon and let you know the brand and i'll even throw a picture up of it so you know what to look for.

its really amazing and refreshing and its one of those soaps that just makes you really feel clean (i like using it on my face as well). I've never had dandruff problems so i cant say it will clear that up, but its only like 3.75 and the bar lasts pretty good and makes me feel a lot better then when i use bronners so maybe its worth a try.

    good luck

I have been washing every 3 to 4 days with rinsing in between, I usually have a really greezy head LOL, I've been afraid of not washing it and having the oils loosen my awesome knots I have going on at the tops of my dreadies

it takes several weeks for the oil levels to get right. maybe try washing once a week. alternate between your ahmpoo and the baking soda mix.

ok, so the brand is called desert essence. its always in the "natural" isle of my shoprite, right by the dr. bronners, and the burts bees and the vitamins.

this is what the bar looks like
    [IMG]
it has jojoba oil and aloe vera in it as well. its vegtable based and makes me feel super clean when i wash with it.
i'd stay away from head and shoulders, that stuff kinda skeeves me out even if i didnt have locks. but yea, tea tree oil is a natural remedy for dandruff anyway, and so is aloe so you should have pretty good luck with this stuff.

i've washed my last set of dreads with this stuff for a good 3 years, and i've used it basically the whole time i've had them, almost a year, on this set, except for a month that i've used dr. bronners which i wasn't really a big fan of. it makes you feel goooooood

Yeah I was really hesitant about using H&S - so how do I wash my hair with bar soap? Cut off a chunk and dissolve it in water? I feel kinda silly rubbing it on my head.... lol :p I don't plan on washing again for a few more days at least, hopefully the balance will equal out soon...

Thanks everyone for your input, I've never really had dandruff like this before and it's making me MENTAL so I really do appreciate your help-
-except mmg- so how's that floor cleaner feel on UR head?

    oh, and thanks luxiebow!

yea i felt silly with bar soaping my hair the first time too. it just doesnt fit the stereotype for shampooing.

but yea, just rub the bar around your head till it lathers up then scrub the hell out of your scalp and rinse.

btw, your beautiful, and the dreads look really good on you.

I was having the same problem, and now wash with H & S every once in awhile... I try to keep it on my scalp, and off my dreads for the most part. It really helps though. It's pretty much residue free (the original one w/o conditioner). My head feels much better. I also use tea tree oil shampoo regularly, and only have dandruff from the dryness if I go a week w/o washing...

so...before dreads i never had dandruff...then about a month into dreads i had the worst dandruff ever! I mean...it looked as if it had snowed on my head. It was itchy and extremely embarrasing. I tried a lot of different things and nothing helped. Finally I broke down and bought this...

You can get it at most health food stores too. Anywho...it works great. I havnt had any dandruff problems since then and Im a year into it.
*lol...I just re -read what I typed and it sounds like a cheesy gimmick commercial...sorry about that. *
