Sup guys, been a while. Commence the flames if you wish, but for the rest me and my buddy were talking about natural dreads and we're stumped about something.. Basically we're wondering how does straight hair dread w/o pre-conditioning if you wash it? We're puzzled because we think that when you wash your hair youre running your fingers through it and the water is going through it and w/e soap and then the drying process. Dumb this down for me :) thx

I guess when you wash it you don't neccesarily need to run your fingers though the hair. Probably does help to clean it better, but you'd be able to do it without running them through.

    lol.

it's nothing to do with your fingers. If you do run your fingers through then yes it will not dread as your splitting the hair.

Shampoo strips hair of oil/grease thus strands of hair create friction and causes hair to knot. Greasy hair is not able to knot because the grease prevents friction which prevents dreads.
    Simples.

yes i can see that. what i dont understand is how do you properly wash your hair so that it is not greasy/dirty without using your hands? do you just pour some liquid soap over your hair and rinse it and hope that all the hair got clean?
also with the drying process i'm assuming you aren't able to use a towel? would a hair dryer also hinder?

You could kinda gather the hair in a bunch and squeeze it in bunches or something. Don't need to run your fingers through it.
My hair use to knot a lot from towel drying it, would get big knots all through it. So I couldnt see that as a problem either, rather more an advantage? You would just need to secttion and pull apart some of the knots.

No. You use your hands to lather the soap. If in doubt wash your hair like you rub your woman's tits.

OR if you've never rubbed a tit, just wash your like you did when you had undreaded hair just don't use your fingers.

YOU CAN use a towel to dry again use like you would when you didn't have dreads and you CAN use a hair dryer just use that like you would on normal hair.

Who knew washing dreads required the intelligence of Einstein..

Then get rough!! As long as your fingers don't act like a comb... You'll be reet. In other words, get rough with your scalp when you rinse that will clean your dreads.

No Fingers, And No Caveman Skills Here, I Just Pat My Scalp Over And

Over Again With The Palm Of My Hand, Whilst Pouring Baking Soda

Over It, And Squeezing The Solution Through The Dreads...:).

Would Hate To Unravel One Of My Newly Forming Babies...:D.

I never used my fingers to wash my straight hair. All you do is grabs clumps of hair and sort of squish it against your scalp and rub. You can rub your scalp with your fingertips too.

    You are a weird guy.

hmmm.... well i wash my hair with my fingers and bronners the same way as when i used regular shampoo. bronners is way more drying and that knots up my hair. im not trying to comb my hair with my fingers, but i can use it to wash my scalp and separate dreadies....
oh well, some people dont wanna believe in the neglect process and justify their wax use.

I get all my hair lathered on top of my head, just like before I had dreads, though I'm conscious to not let my fingers do any combing. I'm a little rough about it, and then I towel dry it. It certainally seems to be working.

The comb was invented to prevent dreadlocks, if dreadlocks didn't happen, we wouldn't have combs and conditioning shampoo.

If you're really interested, neglect for a week or 2, so you can comb out like the square you are, and you'll see that different hair dreads in different ways, there's 4 or 5 different patterns, (they usually mix in any one dread) by which my hair dreads, though of coure there's a few that have quite unique knotting patterns. It's not random, there's some physics to it. And of course, the pattern that a dread takes depends on how greasy your hair was at the time it formed, they each depend on different movements and friction levels.
