is for being able to get on a train or a bus at any time of the day or night instead of having to own an automobile or bum a ride off of someone who does.

the one really down side about the 60s and 70s in america is that public transportation was already being thrown out with the bath water in favor of the automobile and all the exploitation of people that making everyone have to be dependent on them enabled.

it really was and is a kind of trojan horse in that sense, and one that didn't have to be.

it's also for the kind of odd, wierd, wonderful kind of buildings that could be and were built before building codes became in america almost completely universal.

and of course it's for what could have been, never was, but still could, and that includes some of my favorite things, some of which do exist, but used in a more universal way, to replace some of the grinding mundaneness, and really harmful to the mind and body of how things are done now, with cars and paved streets and tickey tacky developments and so on.

you know, like pulling up the pavement and replacing it with diverse plant and animal communities, with bike paths and little people sized trains for transportation instead.

there are always more sorts of things that could be done instead of the way things are. not everything from the past is better because it is. and my nostelgia isn't entirely about the past either.

i've always had a bit of nostelgia for possible futures too. certain kinds of them. where tecnology is used to live closer to nature.

where waste isn't produced unneccessarily and productivity isn't the yardstick but the kind of world we all have to live in is.

I figure that the price of gasoline will make a lot more people nostalgic for those days. The city buses in my town are more crowded than I can ever remember them being, and I have been riding them since the mid-1970s. A few years ago, the system brought back some limited night service. Somehow I get the feeling we might very well go back to those days.
