These are my new dreads. I got my friend Kitty to backcomb my head yesterday and here are some in-progress. This is Kitty. She's wearing the hat my grandpa was teasing me with. He and about everyone else hate my dreads. (Kitty always makes weird faces in photos. She actually really enjoyed this.) And here they are, last night, all done. I think they turned out pretty well. The roots are kinda loose, so I fixed them up this morning and put saltwater in my hair to help everything along.
Fuck me it's new dreads week this week, hopefully we wont troll all the new members away like we always do. Also bonus points for redhead friends, although she doesn't appear to have dreads so she'll have to be excluded from any future red-head based competitions for my affections.
'Lo. I'm curious to see how this will progress for you, given the length... also, how much the backcombs look like.... dreads... in the last picture, is suprising.
Wow, warm welcome! I'm really excited. I've been admiring dreads from afar and since I leaving for college in 2 day, I thought it was a good time for change. I can't wait for them to lock up, especially close to the roots! Plus, it's nice to know the dread community is full of nice people.
yeah, nice start. just ignore them for about 8 months and wash as usual. stay confident in yourself and your natural beauty. don't eff with them. welcome!
Beautifulwarrior, I rinse with apple cider vinegar and wash with backing soda, but only every other day so far. Vigilanteherbalist2: Thanks for the advice. I'm so tempted to back comb the roots some more. But that's why we have bandannas and wraps!
Yeah, do NOT touch the roots, they need to take control of their own locking. Don't expect it to be like braids or cornrows or something, you shouldn't feel it tugging on your scalp, and if you do, it probly will mean you're overdue on ripping.
its kind of cool how you already have some loops and stuff going on in that 2nd picture. looks like a great start
Prepare for your locks to go through some weird phases. It's completely normal and you'll see them loosen up, unravel and loose hair come up, etc. This is supposed to happen. Backcombed locks go through some ugly transitional phases where something looks as if it's going wrong and they aren't forming right. Perfectly normal. Leave them alone, don't rebackcomb... Other than that, make sure your scalp stays clean and slowly transition yourself to washing less, so your scalp produces less oils. I wash once a week with baking soda, for what it's worth...but, my scalp couldn't always make it a whole week...Also, let me stress the importance of leaving your dreads the eff alone! Well, you can do what you want, but IMO, it's best just to let them be...palm rolling and root rubbing, while seemingly something that make them look like they are getting somewhere, can lead to damage and in general is just a plain waste of time. You need time, cleanliness and patience. THAT'S IT! Good luck.
When your dreads get older you'll be begging for the roots to be loose! Tight roots are such a bitch when it comes to tying up your dreads or even washing etc. Don't worry about re-backcoming/T&R, it will all fall out but the dreadies will start to dread themselves. Its like pushing a duckling into the water, it'll learn how to swim on its own Maha shitty metaphor but you get the deeaall ^^ So yea, tight roots are a beeatch
