i can't get to sleep, i keep thinking about things that deserve no thought at this time of day, such as contacting someone on facebook today that i remember well and they have no clue who i am, the fact that my landlord will probably be here all day tomorrow on my day off, still being annoyed at him being here all day today, threads that i read on here, just a bunch of random stuff that really doesnt need to be thought about. anyone else have this problem, when you get in bed and just lay there for hours thinking about stuff that really doesn't matter? what do you think about?

What kind of place do you live in that your landlord can be in it all day?

he's not in the house, he's outside all day here, and he goes in and out of the basement as he pleases as the door to the basement is in our front porch area.

I think about the possibilities of the future before I go to sleep quite often, but never for hours, or even close.

I also keep thinking I should buy some drugs soon.

try focusing on a particular subject (your breathing is a popular one)
let your mind wander, but when you leave that focus point just bring your mind back to that focus. do that for a good 5-10 mins and your mind should clear up.

i used to have that problem all the time, so i started drinking until i passed out every night.

i don't do that anymore. the problem isn't as bad as it used to be, but it does still happen occasionally. i just deal with it since it's no longer nightly.

edit: i also stay in bed. getting on the forums when you can't sleep just doesn't seem like an effective way of falling asleep.

the breathing thing might work, just bring your mind back to your breathing every time it starts to wonder. and jimmy p- i wish i could get caught up on the possibilities of the future, my mind always seems to get stuck on what has happened in the past, even if the past means just something that happened earlier in the day. yes, the forums would seem kind of counterproductive when trying to fall asleep, but i gotta say that after i got on here last night and posted abou tthis, and made a little rant post about my freaking landlord i got back in bed and went right to sleep! i guess i needed to get it out of my head :)

    Hi,

I often can't get to sleep if I'm heavy under fire, e.g. if a deadline of a project is knocking at the door or if there is more trouble as usual with a customer. For me it helps to count. Do it slow and consciously. Every now and then you might disgress. That's no problem, just return to counting. I can't remember if I ever reached 1000 with this method. Sure, it doesn't work if you aren't tired.

    Regards
    Gyro

I had the same problem for a long time. I learned great deep breathing techniques. You can start easy enough, just lay down in your bed, put on music that is calming for you, start by taking deep breaths in though your nose and pierce your lips as you lightly force the air out. Take some time to build up a nice calm rhythm, while you take in as much air as you can, ppl dont realize how important it is to breath properly and often take in to little air. Self meditation as you breath will help as well. Bach Flowers is an all natural remedy for anxiety, it comes in creams, sprays and balms and isnt very expensive. Good luck

    Hi,

I forgot to mention that listening to pink or white noise (depending on what works best for you) might help. But I haven't tried it yet.
