Anyone that knows me knows that I'm interested in the paranormal. I used to run a website called 'The Eerie Network' all about it (and currently have plans to reopen it at some point). I used to be a believer in things such as ghosts, etc, but more recently I've become more sceptical. I've always been interested in hearing about paranormal stories, but one things that never had is a paranormal experience of my own. That is, until now.

At around 1 AM this morning, during an interesting chat session with a number of my friends on MSN Messenger, I needed a toilet break. I went upstairs towards the bathroom like I've done a million times before.

The light in the downstairs hallway was on, but the upstairs landing light was turned off. As I was walking up the stairs, once I got near the top of them, I thought I heard the sounds of someone (or something, such as my cat) slowly walking from the bathroom down the landing. I looked, but saw nothing (although the light was off, there was enough light to have been able to see something if something was there).

I got to the top of the stairs, just about to step onto the landing, when all of a sudden I stopped. I felt something in front of me. Not 'felt' as in touched something, but 'sensed' that something was there.

I half expected that I was about to walk into my dad, in the darkness, on a journey from the bathroom back to his bedroom, but there was no one there. I could not see anything, but I could still feel a 'presence'. Whatever it was, I felt it move down the landing, before disappearing at my parents' bedroom door.

I got to the bathroom and turned the light on, half expecting to see my cat on the landing, but she was nowhere to be seen. She, nor anyone, or anything, else.

I did my business and come back downstairs.

I don't know what to make of it myself. My own mind tells me that it was just my imagination, but I'm open to ideas. What do you think?

How late was it? Alot of weird shit happens to me when I'm up real late and tired. Like the numbers on my alarm clock will move around, on text on my monitor.

Well like I said, it was at 1am, so not that late at all (my normal bedtime can be anything between 4 and 6 am), I'm sure that it was the cat or something, it's just the sense that i was going to walk into something which threw me off.

    Hmm, rather freaky...

My grandfather died in July. He wanted me to organise his funeral etc. I had finished writing the eulogy and went to bed. A few hours later I woke up and so did my husband, he decided to get up and watch TV so he left the bedroom and closed the door behind him so I could get back to sleep. As I was drifting off I was suddenly startled by a light that had been switched on in the room. I thought my husband had done it and I was going to have a go at him but when I opened my eyes no-one was there, and it was the lamp next to my side of the bed that had turned itself on.

On two occasions I have heard footsteps. One time I was the only one home; the other time was the other night and my husband was asleep at the time.

    World of Dan,

I was somewhat skeptical about ghost stories, etc. — until I had an experience like your own.
One night I was on my way downstairs at my old house when I felt an unexplained need to turn around and look into my darkened room. Being predictable, I turned around, and when I did I felt a palpable presence in the darkness, something that seemed to be looking at me. It sent a chill down my spine.
It was spooky as hell (no pun intended), and I know my feeling wasn't the result of too much to drink. Needless to say, I ran downstairs, and then tried to avoid my room for a few days.
Before the experience, I'd always been somewhat skeptical about the paranormal — and I remain somewhat skeptical because I believe most people, myself included, have a subconscious need to believe that life is more than "You're born and then you live and then you die" to quote The Smiths.
Now, a few years removed from my experience, I guess I believe there are things in the world that are not easily explained. Hell, at one point in human history, people thought the world was flat, so I'm sure there's going to be more surprises throughout the ages.
Maybe you did bump into one of those things that usually goes "bump in the night." I know I can say I have never felt another presence like the one I did that night at my old house. Just remembering the experience, which I usually only break out around campfires, makes me believe you could have had a run in with something unexplainable.
    I know I may have.

I'm currently at a stage in my life where I'm questioning the world, trying to find out what, how, why, when and where. I've already found that I don't believe in god.... that there is no such thing as evil, and that we're all made of energy...

Now the thing is, with the fact I don't believe in god, I sure don't believe in the idea of heaven and hell.... I don't think I believe in any form of afterlife (other than the energy that makes us live (our soul if you like) returns to the universe, and gets converted into something else.

    (sorry, i'm rambaling)

to cut a long story short... I guess I'm going to try keep an open mind.... but will always take the scientific answer over the 'paranormal' one... if you see what I mean?

I know exactly what you mean. I'm currently at a point in my life where I have a ton of questions about God, etc. Being from middle America (ugh!) I'm constantly reminded of all the far-right fundamentalist Christians who seek to take away my freedoms by legislating morality, etc. The fact many of them are hypocrits - they support the death penalty, yet rail against abortion (sorry for the heavy stuff), makes me hesitant to allign myself with any religious group. It also makes me question God. If he or she's up there - and an almighty being, too boot - then how does he/she put up with all the close-minded individuals worshiping him/her. How almighty is that?
To make a long post short, I guess I see where you're coming from, and I agree that it's important to keep an open mind about all things.

I try to think about ghosts as little as possible because it is one of the few things that really scares me. Now I hate spiders and I hate bridges but if pushed I can deal with both but ghosts(and by association all things paranormal) really freaks me out.

I know what you have been on about when you get that spine tingling feeling but your mind does play tricks on you, but my ex-girlfriend told a few stories about a house her sister used to live in. Apperently it was supposed to have a ghost in it - her son(very young then) apperently used to talk about "Tommy", an old man he used to talk to(in his bedroom). And this sister woke up, with the feeling there was someone in her bed with her, and once woke up apperently being smothered. There was once(when my ex babysat) an occasion when the child was small, she was babysitting and the child had been put to bed, whe they heard him crying. She and her then boyfriend went upstairs to find the baby undressed and all his clothes neatly folded on the end of the bed.

Now you may think I am bulling, but thats what she told me and her sister backed her up when I asked her about it.

Now thats some scary assed shit
