The other day my fiancee went to the blood mobile to gice blood as she is type O "The Universal Doner". She answered all of the questions honestly and when she got home she got a call from the Red Cross saying they couldn't use her blood. Heres why. There is a question on the questionaire "Have you had unprotected sex with someone who has had sex with another man after 1977?" Well she answered honestly. I was Sexually Abused from about 1980-about 1983. My cousin who molested me was about 2 years older than me. It's funny I've pretty much dealt with all of the emotional scarring that went with it. To me even mentioning it is like talking about falling off my bicycle when I was 5. My cousin was only about 8 to 11 at this time and used all of the adult tactics (Gifts, manipulation, "If you tell anyone We'll get in trouble" etc.) to get it to happen and get it to continue to happen. It's almost like getting punished for something that wasn't my fault. Peace Out, Rev J
Bizarre isnt it Of course most women would have no clue if there man has. A) Your situation B) Guy who cheats on his wife every week with other guys often in unsafe ways unbeknownst to the wife A Answers truthfully, cant give blood, B Answers truthfully and can ??? Part of this - it can only true if you say it out loud - mindset
That's absurd. I was about to give blood the other day as I'm O- like your wife... but I figured they'd throw it out when they found THC in there so it would just be a waste of perfectly good life force... Which is bullshit cause if anyone needs to relax... it the guy who just got a fucking blood transfusion. If it was me I'd fucking request stoner blood.
i can't give blood either. i tried 3 times; 2 of them it just stopped going into the bag before it was even half full, and the other time i filled the bag and felt like i was dying. i think i just don't have as much blood in me as i'm supposed to. it didn't help that i always had an erection when i was donating...
It's the biggest insult. I mean, an individual tries to give blood, and by doing so proves their benevolence and care towards there fellow man- but this donation is all susceptible to whether or not somebody else can be bothered to do their job. They could always give you a blood test, but it seems like that might be just a little too much work to save a few lives here and there.
This bureaucratic bullshit just reinforces my practice of lying on the form. I call it "honorable lies." For one thing it is a technicality, like you were not an out homosexual at that age and fact is str8 teen boys play around all the time. Unfortunately, if they have her name and such she will be on the roster and never be able to donate anywhere. What a waste. BTW, it is the FDA that is causing it, not the blood banks.
keyword being beaurocratic bullshit. You aren't being punished, it just falls under guidelines that the individual bloodbanks have no control over
I am also O- and have given blood many times. But I remember one time I was asked a question something like "Have you ever had sex with someone who has been to Chad, Sudan, Uganda, or Rwanda after 1977?" I replied, "How would I know that!?" He looked at me, waiting. I said, "No".
Wow, thats just rude of them. A person is trying to be helpful for others, and they dont take it - what a waste. I bet many people lied (also some unaware) and thats perfectly fine if a person says "no" and lies to their part. I had many friends in HS who were stroners, and were high as hell but they donated each year, and lied to a few of the questions, they still took their blood.
Not to stir the pot too much, but I can see the logic. The groups in Canada that have elevated rates of HIV are sex trade workers, injection-drug users, Africans, and homosexual men. You can't text for HIV one-hundred percent - this seems more about playing the numbers game rather than discrimination.
In the US, blacks who constitute less than 15% of the total population account for over 50% of violent crimes. Maybe we should just put all blacks in jail as a preventive because of those numbers. Yes, it is called discrimination. (BTW, I just pulled those statistics outta my ass. But you may find the numbers close to that.) Just last Friday I gave another pint. 5 gallons and counting. I am still HIV negative and have had sex with another man more than once since 1977.
Would you take a prostitute's blood? Somebody who has shared needles? As much as I am not for discrimination, I don't think a person's right to not be discriminated against is worth more than somebody's right to minimize their exposure to HIV.
Yes, if it was free of viruses. Statistically the pro's chances of getting infected by one of her johns may be high, but what about that john's wife? there is still a risk of heterosexual women being infected by their downlow husbands or boyfriends. So, the prostitute and a recently infected str8 woman could either taint the blood supply. Except for antigen tests. Those are done on the blood supply now, something not available when the donation rules were in place in the past when only antibody tests were available.
You have too much faith in antigen tests - there is a period of months after infection in which people do not have a large enough viral load to test positive. For a small segment of the population, this window is even longer. Does being being gay mean you have HIV? Obviously not. Just like not every injection drug user, African, or prostitute is HIV positive. But it increases the risk significantly enough (gay men are 44 times more likely to have HIV according to the CDC) that I'd argue that the health benefits of not including them outweigh any affronts to dignity that exclusion creates. ...according to some studies done by the CDC one in five gay men tested HIV positive and over half of those were unaware of their HIV status. Unsettling figures. http://www.cdc.gov/nchhstp/newsroom/docs/FastFacts-MSM-FINAL508COMP.pdf
What you describe sounds like an antibody test. The p24 and the more sensitive RT-PCR Antigen test window period is 2-3 weeks. As for the other statistics you have to watch. Statistically, putting one hand on a hot plate and the other on dry ice you would be comfortable. So of those new infections (from 2006 BTW) the majority was white men who have sex with men, followed by black men who have sex with men. But right behind those two highest at risk is Black Heterosexual Women at about a third of the combined MSM. So they've taken demographically the Most common new infections but neglected the third less common in their exclusions. So, how safe are we getting blood from heterosexual women? I'll put more faith in the polymerase chain reaction test of the blood supply over some questionnaire that does not exclude women whose B/F or husband is on the downlow.
they do not care if there is THC in your blood. they simply prefer that you are not high for the donation. it says so somewhere at americanredcross.org seriously?! was the nurse taking your blood really hot or something? i have NEVER been asked that question when i donate blood. but for sam, i have, out of nowhere, told them that i had smoked marijuana. they still took my blood.
As long as you aren't high when you give, it's fine. But if you're bi, gay, or have slept with a bi man!!
