MUSLIM scholars were gathering at an emergency convention in Birmingham today to discuss the cartoon caricatures of Mohammed which have sparked anger across the Islamic world.

The event, in Small Heath, will bring together representatives from more than 650 UK mosques.

The organisers are hoping to coordinate protests against the publication of the cartoons under the banner of the Muslim Action Committee.

A MAC spokesman said: "The committee have called an emergency convention of the leading scholars and Imams from all over the UK to discuss the issues and take key decisions as to the way forward.

"It is expected that over 350 of the leading Muslim scholars will attend."

Muslim groups have been swift to condemn the London demonstrators who threatened violence over the cartoons, first published in a Danish paper in September.

Thousands of moderate Muslims are expected to attend a rally in Trafalgar Square on Saturday to protest at both the cartoons and the response of Islamic extremists.

"The law intervenes where freedom of expression encourages crimes. And rightly so. Where the law does not intervene, where we exercise our rights to freedom of expression, we have a duty to show respect before we speak."

    PRESS RELEASE 6th February 2006

PUBLICATION OF OFFENSIVE CARICATURES OF HOLY PROPHET MUHAMMED (peace be upon him) IN EUROPE

    CONVENTION OF LEADING MUSLIM SCHOLARS

    KEY DECISIONS TO BE TAKEN

The publication of offensive caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad ( peace be upon him ) have caused outrage amongst the majority of the 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide. This latest outrage is being noted as an ongoing series of attacks on Islam and Muslims. The decision of different media to reprint the said caricatures has continued to inflame the situation.

The angry reaction of the Muslims in the UK is being fuelled by the lack of sensitivity and unreasonableness by the media and certain governments. The apology of the Danish newspaper and the Danish Prime Minister has been rejected as it does not go far enough to rectify the damage done.

Reports of rising tensions and anxiety in the Muslim community have started to cause concern to its leading scholars and Imams. In their effort to bring direction to the protest and cohesion to the debate the leading Muslim organisations have decided to unite under a uniform campaign under the name of Muslim Action Committee (MAC). Leading organisations, inter alia the International Muslims Organisation; Markazi Jamate ahle Sunnat; Jamate Ahle Sunnah Europe; Hizbut Tahrir and the Islamic Human Rights Commission have already united. The said organisations already represent over 650 Mosques and centres throughout the UK. It is expected that over the next few days the vast majority of all major Muslim organisations will unite in this campaign.

The Muslim Action Committee have called an emergency convention of the leading scholars and Imams from all over the UK to discuss the issues and take key decisions as to the way forward. It is expected that over 350 of the leading Muslim scholars will attend.

The said convention shall be held at the Rex Centre, 432 Coventry Road, Birmingham B10 0UG. The convention takes place on Wednesday 8th February 2006 and will start at 11.30am with a formal press briefing around 1.30pm and the issue of a press statement.

    End

I guess you could see it that way.. atleast it will be a relief to get a deffinite response from a large body of muslim groups.. It would be a relief to not have to second guess what the overall response will be.. less speculation. If it turns out to be 'bad cop'.. Atleast it will be known. A line will be drawn as far as UK muslim groups go.. maybe a more focused general opinion.. rather than individual voices shouting rhetoric.

Thats idonesian not from the UK.. the whole point was not to harp on about peoples reaction .. but a combined reaction.. We shall see on the 18th..

If you leave the speculation for another thread [lots to choose from].. and leave this thread for what actually is said in these meetings.. we might know..

Please jonny2mad .. enough.. I get your message.. Please leave this thread alone.. Go put that kinda stuff in other threads.. I did NOT start this thread for any other reason than to post or comment on the UKs response and furthering responses as a whole .. not individuals or 'death threats'...

Don't you wish for a more rounded view of this from moderate muslims ?.

The Muslim campaigners behind a mass rally in Trafalgar Square today have close links to Islamic terror groups, the Daily Mail can reveal.
Despite promoting itself as the 'moderate' voice of Islam, the Muslim Association of Britain includes a former military commander of Hamas, the Palestinian organisation behind dozens of suicide bombings in Israel.

The Association has also been described in Parliament as the British wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, the banned Egyptian group whose former members include Osama Bin Laden.

The revelations raise serious questions about support given by London Mayor Ken Livingstone to the rally, expected to attract 10,000 protesters against cartoons of Mohammed published in European newspapers.

He hosted a press conference at his offices on Thursday to promote the demonstration as a chance to air the views of moderate Muslims.

However, Labour MP Louise Ellman said the MAB was an 'extremist' group whose members repeatedly advocated suicide bombings in Israel.

"They are an extremely dangerous organisation," she said. "Leading members of MAB have indicated their links with Hamas and their support for suicide bombings abroad.

"It is not tenable for a group to support suicide bombings in another country while expecting to be seen as moderate in this country."

Mike Whine, of the Community Security Trust, which monitors anti-Semitic behaviour, said: 'The leading members have close links with the Muslim Brotherhood and have been active in anti-Jewish propaganda.

"We are worried about their increasing influence within the Muslim community." Azzam al-Tamimi - a Palestinian described yesterday by the MAB as one of its leading political thinkers - caused outrage 18 months ago when he told the BBC he would willingly carry out a suicide bombing in Israel.

"Sacrificing myself for Palestine is a noble cause," he said. "It is the straight way to pleasing God and I would do it if I had the opportunity."

In 2004, Dr Tamimi arranged for Egyptian preacher Yusuf al-Qaradawi to visit the UK despite his calls for homosexuals to be stoned to death and his suggestions that rape victims be punished if dressed "immodestly".

    Terrorist activities

Last year, five MAB members were made trustees of the re-opened Finsbury Park Mosque, North London, which was closed in 2003 because of the activities of its imam Abu Hamza.

One trustee, Mohammed Kassem Sawalha, was named in a U.S. court case as a former senior Hamas commander responsible for terrorist activities in the West Bank in the 1990s.

He is a former MAB president who admits he still supports Hamas. MAB leader Anas al-Tikriti is the son of Osama al-Tikriti, leader of the Muslim Brotherhood in Iraq.

The organisation has strong historic links with Al Qaeda and other terror groups, including Islamic Jihad, which was behind the 1981 killing of Egyptian president Anwar Sadat.

In the past, the MAB's website has encouraged followers to download images of the Star of David transformed into a swastika and has compared Israel to Nazi Germany.

Internet watchdogs have reported the site to the Home Office for containing allegedly criminally racist material.

The group has, however, repeatedly condemned calls for terror attacks on Britain and has tried to secure the release of British hostage Norman Kember in Iraq.

It has also criticised the removal of Bibles from hospital bedsides as "political correctness gone mad".

Yesterday Ihtisham Hibatullah, MAB's media director, accused Miss Ellman of 'inciting hatred towards the Muslim community' with her comments.

"This kind of statement can only result in dividing communities and creating mistrust when the Association is working to build bridges and promote understanding and dialogue in our country," he said. Asked about the views of Dr Tamimi, Mr Hibatullah said: "He is one of our leading political thinkers and a leading member of the Association."

Police have promised to take a harder line at today's rally after anger over their lack of action at a protest in London last week. Then, demonstrators held placards calling for the beheading of people who "insult Islam". Today, however, 'snatch squads' will be ready to arrest any troublemakers.

MAB was founded in 1997 by Kamal el-Helbawy, who was at the time the European spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood.

when you really think about it, though, we don't have to respect anyone's religion, just their right to practice it until it interferes with our own practices. we don't have to respect anyone's religious icons, we have a right to be a personally disrespectful as we like as long as we aren't crossing lines like firebombing mosques, synagogues and churches and denyin people their right to life and liberty. but johnny can call their prophet a donkey fucker if he likes. does that make him an asshole? maybe, but it's his right to be so.

its never about respectin anyone's whatever ..its more about respectin peoples (and along comes their chosen way of lives) some may feel very good about themselves for sayin things that are disrespectful to others (course, they can only do this behind screens) but should realise they lose the right to criticise and prevent peoples' reaction

..for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. now where did i hear that ? newton, anybody ?

see theres where the problem is, muslims get violent if you say you think their prophet was a fake , I have said to muslims to their face why I think mohammed was a liar and a very immoral man .

but in some countrys I would be wise not to say it openly as its illegal, this general violence and repression against critics I would say is one of the clearest proofs that islam isnt true and mohammed wasnt a prophet .

because if it was true whatever a critic had to say wouldnt effect things

sure. but seriously trying to tell me what i can and cannot say is not something that works with me. if it was, i'd have joined the military. demanding my respect beyond the most basic form due all people without knowing me or giving it in return is not going to work.
