When it comes to music... what is it you look for in an artist? Are you interested in their life itself, watch interviews, trying to find the point behind it? Do you like to know the names of all the people in the band? The band's influences? And so on. It has always bothered me a tad that people expect me to name off every damn member of a band and every album if I say that I like them... It's always interesting to find out where the band is coming from and what it wants to achieve... But what I care about in music is the musical quality, the image the artist projects (not necessarily the artist himself... David Bowie is still interesting in real life, but I'm madly in love with Ziggy Stardust, not David Bowie... ya know).... and what the lyrics mean to me (Ya know, per example... "Take a Walk on the Wild Side" by Lou Reed is actually about a whole group of colourful characters... and it's an interesting story... but when I listen to the song I couldn't give a fuck about that... that song has much more meaning to me than the story behind it ever could...) It's like poetry... I dislike it when a poem comes with the author's interpertation or when someone asks me what one of my poems is about (I don't like titling them)... "It doesn't matter what I think it's about..." I tell em, "The only thing that matters is the meaning you get out of it for yaself, ya know". So, how about ya?
I listen to music because it means something to me. Every song I listen to has some sort of meaning to it, some sort of significance. I could give a flying fuck who sings it or what they're singing it about. I think as soon as a song leaves a musician it is no longer theirs to claim meaning to. It is up to each individual to divine what the song means to them. I also attach songs to people. Every person I know has a song or two that reminds me of them. I'll hear certain songs that make me think of certain people from the past. There are songs that remind me of myself as well. Take the song Gigantic by the Pixies. You know what that song was written about? An interracial couple. Okay, maybe to them that's what it means, but to me it is about something completely different. I also could give two shits about the names of people in bands or any of that. I know alot of that sort of stuff though from picking it up over the years. My mind has this habit of retaining information so I know lots of random trivia. But, I agree with you. I don't care about the artist or their meaning. I just care that it moves me. I just care what it means to me.
That's pretty cool. I never did attach songs to people... nicknames, feelings, colours, ideas, and human skin... but never songs. Hmm... I tend to associate songs with moods and places and so on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on... Typing "and on" really fast over and over is fun. Anyhow... Hey Paul, Hey Paul, Hey Paul.. lets have a ball!
I prefer to unattach human skin. It makes for wonderfully warm clothing in the winter! And, if you ever get hungry and are stuck without food, well, human skin coats also make wonderful jerky! Gigantic is by far my favorite Pixies song, besides the one in my sig. The Pixies are amazing, and Modest Mouse, Belle & Sebastian, Radiohead.......fuck. I need to get out the ole headphones.
Words are the most important thing to me when it comes to music. But that's about it, whether or not I like the person's songwriting.
Haha, I've listened to all the band you've mentioned today I Bleed is a great great song. I really like "I've Been Tired", at least the lyrics (Probably because it mentions Lou Reed )
Ooooooooooooh! I just thought of another great Pixies song! Cactus! Fuck, how could I forget that? They have too many good ones. The Bowie cover of Cactus ain't too shabby either. Lou Reed rocks from what I've heard. I haven't listened to too much Velvet Underground or his solo stuff, but I keeping meaning to. I love Pale Blue Eyes. I'm gonna take some Kava later (because no more ganj for me), get a buzz goin' and download some more. And you must have fantastic taste in music to have listened to all those bands.
I have the best taste in music in the world, together with the best taste for women, and the best taste for destruction I would suggest good VU and Lou songs to download... but every single song ever created by them is good. So download them all. It's like Modest Mouse... no bad songs... ever.
Does this mean that's you'd rather read really good poetry than listen to really good instrumental music? (at a neutral mood)
Haven't heard it yet... I believe in listening to the entire CD... the tracks on their albums compliment each other rather well most of the time.
Dude it's all about feeling it. I've jammed a lot and communicating and expressing what you feel that you cannot put in words but rather into music is so beautiful. Sometimes there are not so good feelings being expressed and others are great feelings . I try to find that in music and feeling. As the essence and feeling is the music. and music is food for the soul. lol was that some deep shit or what im just baked Peace and love - kevin
When I was younger I paid attention to who band members were, was actually interested in their lives. I dated some musicians. Now, especially after meeting a few famous people, & being treated like a foolish pauper..I really could care less. I like what sounds good to me. That spans many types of musical genres. Getting older though, unfortunately kinda means I'm a few years out of the loop due to less time to chase it all.
fuck i love music so much any kind, really it doesn't matter i care about who writes the music but it's mainly in a respectful way or sometimes i just love musicans purely for their sexualiy more than anything i love the primal aspects that music brings forth i love the melodicness of music and the lyrics and the rhythm and the beat theres so much good music out there, i just love it lately music has been more of a passion for me than my art
