Wow, that guy was a total asshole. I'm not a big fan of techno, but Tool and Mudvayne are hardly intellectual music. Gram Parsons may have something to say about your opinion on country music's genius.

The Flaming Lips' Zaireeka is my suggestion.

who said I was? intellectual Music!?!?! wow, you dumbass. One of their CDs is called LD 50, I guess you wouldn't know what that means. Take your shitty ass techno BS with simplistic loops and beats that sound the same and compare that to actual musicians who went to college and studied the arts and expanded their minds through instrumentation of music.

Intelligence here is not in the music, it is the music. From front to back, the two bands you listed are among gods in this world and for you to go and say Flaming Lips, your just proving to me your own ignorance. Here are some lryics from the bands you so solely judged as no intellectual music

    Mudvayne:
    First voice:
These symptoms suggested that our evolution, I suppose, from the animal kingdom
Into the human kingdom itself was catalyzed, or triggered by our encounter with
    These hallucenogenics, and

    Second voice:
Yes, we are an ape with a symbiotic relationship to a mushroom, and that has
Given us self reflection, language, religion and all the spectrum of effects
    That flow from these things.

    First voice again:
And one can only wonder how these hallucinogens might effect our future
    Evolution as well...

    Second voice again:
They have brought us to this point, and as we make our relationship to them
Concious, we may be able to take control of our furute evolutionary path.

    Emotions inside us troubling,
    The hatred inside us escalating,
The sickness inside us keeps us weak,
The masses inside of us suffering they are bleeding,
The calling inside us sick with greed,
The voices calling to us deafening we're not listening
    Cannot receive the obvious
Line up cattle and cut the necks
Swat at the flies omit disgust
    The leaders inside us posturing,
The pollution inside of us suffocating me,
    The science inside us menacing
The will that's inside of us its dying end is coming
    Cannot receive the obvious
Line up cattle and cut the necks
Drain us of life and cleanse the mess
Wash me off inside, wash me off inside
    We're killing ourselves killers
Goddamn we fucked up the circumstance,
Too late to save us from ourselves,
Callous minds against trust and confidence,
Too late to give a damn now
Too late to save us from ourselves, too late to make it all go away,
Too late to beg pardons from the mother, too late to give a damn
    Now we'll sit and wait
Wait wait for the coming. of the end
Wait for the coming the killing the ending the plight of man
Deserving no mercy expelling by god's hand,
It's okay the ending it's over no more pain .
Emotion the hatred the sickness the calling

    Tool:
"See, I think drugs have done some *good* things for us, I really do. And if you don’t believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a Favor: go home tonight and take all your albums, all your tapes, and all your cd’s and burn em’. 'Cause you know what? The musicians who’ve made all that great music that’s enhanced your lives throughout the years...
    Rrrrrrrrrrrrreal ------ high on drugs."
    --Bill Hicks

"Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather."

"It's not a war on drugs, it's a war on personal freedom, it´s what it is ok?. Keep that in mind at all times. Thank you!"
    -- Bill Hicks

Black then white are, all i see in my infancy.
Red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
    Lets me see.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.

Black then white are, all i see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
    lets me see
there is so much more and beckons me
to look thru to these infinite possibilities.
As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind.

Feed my will to feel this moment, urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.

    (I embrace myyy
    desire to 2x)
    feel the rhythm, to
    feel connected,
    enough to step aside and,
    weep like a widow, to
    feel inspired, to
    fathom the power, to
    witness the beauty, to
    bathe in the fountain, to
    swing on the spiral, to
    swing on the spiral, to

    swing on the spiral of
    our divinity and
    still be a humannnnnnnnn

With my feet upon the ground I move myeslf between the sounds and open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out. I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
    what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.
    (Spiral out. Keep going. 4x)

Oh, and I'm not an asshole....I'm a dick.

I'll shoot one from left field here. I happen to love bluegrass music when i'm tripping. But music has a personal relationship with the listener. I would recommend listening to music you really enjoy instead of music that is "good" for tripping. In a way I think almost anything could be good trip music if it's special to you. But as far as creating a psychedelic sound there is definitely something to it and there are definitely some bands that do it better than others.

    MAY I...

Yeah I have no idea what LD-50 means. You're right. You're so cutting edge, you know. What with listening to Isis and Kyuss.

And thanks for those wonderful lyrical excerpts, I'd never heard any of those songs before. You really educated me there. Your intelligence is obvious to all who read your list of "hip" bands. Shouldn't you be browsing myspace?

Do you know what it means?! It's the dose that is fatal for 50% of the test subject. So what?

As for the topic, the next time I trip I want to listen to some albums that have meant a lot to me since 9th grade and earlier. These include:

Saint Vitus - Born Too Late
    Venom - Black Metal
    Opeth - Orchid
    Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings

I'll also probably listen to some indie folk, like Beirut or Battles. And probably just whatever I want to listen to at the time, I always think about what i'm going to eat/listen to/watch next time i get high, but then I eat/listen to/watch something else.

    Word to Drone.

Anyone who's ever been to Erowid knows what LD-50 means, it has no psychedelic connotations whatsoever. That guy's just a jerk who likes to sound elite with his indie namedrops.

hateful rhetoric aside, I agree that techno doesn't have the same expertise and level of training involved to produce it, but since when are those the criteria for music that's worth listening to? I'm sure that when a lonely african slave picked up a piece of wire and attached it to the side of a building to pluck out a few simple notes, he didn't have much training, but that didn't mean the sounds he produced had any less meaning and soul than an experienced group of musicians.

My rational self begs me to not enjoy techno when I hear it, but the stirrings in my heart and soul beg to differ, and that voice usually prevails. It goes against what I thought good music is, but it's all just manipulation of chemicals in the brain. It's a different effect, but no less valid.

I have no idea why the one dude had such a vicious disdain for those who espoused certain genres he didn't like. THere's got to be something more there than just remarking on a less than pleasant artform. Kinda like how latent homosexuals overcompensate by being more anti-gay than the others, someone who is anti-techno on the surface may just be cloaking a secret enjoyment of the genre.

edit:sorry eclispin. we did get a bit derailed. I'm downloading it right now

yeah I totally dig it. I deem it great for rolling. acid tripping is different for me though; I generally don't enjoy heavy beats on acid, just light ambient songs. I'm finally going to roll after having not rolled in 2 years, so thanks. good timing.
