not sure if this belongs here but i just got a call from my sister in wisconsin and she told me that she lost her mucous plug on monday the 2,she's not due until november 16, and from that day up until now the great dane ,that she has been taking care of, has been by her side day and night from when she gets home to when she goes to sleep he is literally on her ass. now my question is why the hell is the dog acting this way???? usually he is playing with the three kids and sleeps in their room but since she lost the plug he has been with her constantly

My grandma's dog never really liked my mother. When she got pregnant with my little brother, the dog started to follow her everywhere. Constantly would be barking at anyone coming near her or anything. My mom had a rough pregnancy. The dog just loved to be near her, licking her. And the day before my brother made his grand entrance, my grandma's dog went into high gear around my mom. Just ballistically crazy protective, and making almost a nest out of covers and stray coats.

It's my personal opinion that dogs are totally intuitive. They know, even when we don't.

Not to counter what Holly said about dogs being intuitive (because from experience I totally agree), but a more tangible reason the dog is acting in such a manner may have to do with the scent your sister is letting off.

And while it's normal for women to lose their mucous plug weeks before labor, 6 weeks is longer than I had heard. But I'm no doctor...

Jenny was indeed born too early, but I started losing bits and pieces of my mucous plug two months before she was born. It's not uncommon, and the mucous plug will regenerate itself. If there's blood, that is a sign she is dilating, and needs to take things real easy. My dog also was very attentive and sweet, and would not leave my side when labor became imminent before either of my births. She (the dog) gets the same way when I'm in a lot of pain from the endo, too. Even when people say things like "you don't look sick" the dog always knows.

dogs are really cool this way.
when I was pregnant, I was living at my mom's for the last half and the dog followed me everywhere, especially the days when I was going into labour. he didn't leave my side once.
and when I started to moan from the pain of my contractions, he would almost mull me cuz he was so worried. it was really sweet, but at that point, wads of white fur in my face was not all that welcome....lol
