I haven't watched that channel since I was a little turd, atleast two years ago. just kidding, like 12-15 years ago. I hear they no longer play music. but I imagine it's like any other major pop-culture television station; full of commercials, reality shows and other mind-numbing shit. a good way to waste a perfectly functioning mind.

now listen to the old fart here. i saw mtv when it first came on the air back in 1979 or 1980. back then music videos was all they played. i thought it was pure 100% grade horse shit even back then! i have not seen it since then and, i don't want to see it now either. i never have been much for tee vee. even when i was a little kid back in the 1960's, tee vee was making people even dumber back then too.

MTV is shitty because people like shit.

It is the end result, not the cause.

i dont have cable, but a friend of mine loves mtv and i watched a couple shows the other day and was appalled. it was sleazy and stupid.. they portray kids these days as complete morons.

i agree that it is the result, not the cause. but still its hard for me to beleive some of these shows even stay on the air.

Its hard for me to believe "Springer" and "Maury" are on the air as for some shows on MTV2 like "Rob&Big" I could take over any "Springer Corncobb county special.. As for regular MTV I hardly watch that, I have more channels than I can handle. as long as I can get "House". and movies I like Im cool. But as I mentioned Ive been observant and I like Nickelodeon, but now its forming teens into Real World Mtv replicants...

mtv sucks. i used to like it but then thought how can they call it music television when the only time they actually do play music it's for a minute at the most. and then a little while afterwards i realized that the music they do play on mtv shouldn't even be called music. it's an insult to the word.

Bimbo TV would be a good name for it.

As MTV spiraled downward, some people were still defending it. Even that group seems to have diminished now.

Right now, VH1 is spiraling down just like MTV did years ago. They're not quite in the toilet yet, but well on their way.

There will always be a few diehards that defend mediocrity and the system. There will always be some who would defend being served up manure at a restaurant and get upset with someone else who criticizes the restaurant.

actually no, i haven't, not for more then a decade, but the last time i did, whenever that was, i think of all the things corporate media are doing to dumb us down, mtv, is probably among the least of them. certainly compaired to the 'infotainment' (which amounts in reality to pretty one sided propiganda, however much thy try to pretend otherwise, and i damd sure don't mean 'liberal' either) they try to pass of as 'news' it is.

compared to cnn and fox 'news', i'd call mtv mostly harmless, or at least i think i would, but its been so long since i've seen it, that i really couldn't say for sure.

(the last time i saw mtv they were still featuring madona, so that ought to give you some idea of the time fraime of how long ago that was)

another thing that occurs to me, if you've got 300 channels or even 20, of cable, or direct or what have you, why are you even bothering with mtv?

arn't there like anime channels and the weather channel even, and the p.e.g. channels?

    =^^=

I haven't watched MTV in a few months. every now and then I'll turn it on and see TRL, or want to see a new Tru Life episode, but that's about it. I'd rather be news-oriented.

Yeah, I remember when MTV actually played music videos--and that was all they played! That's why it's called Music Television! :) Of course, that was back in the early 1980s--from what I hear, they don't do that anymore--so why is it still on the air? I enjoyed watching MTV when it first came on the air--but I don't think I have any desire to watch it these days, with all the stuff they're playing on it now!

I agree with everything said. Where did the music go? seriously, what is this obsession with reality television? Not only MTV but on tv in general? I don't understand how people can waste perfectly good time watching the ridiculous stuff spoon fed to their inactive brains. It's disgusting? It one of the problems with today's society and culture, what we see and how we act, why can't there be thought provoking shows. I mean sure TV isn't always gonna be that way. Not every channel is the Discovery channel, but how many hours, every week, every month, every year, can we spend dumbing ourselves with bullshit TV?

I am proud to say, MTV amongst other stations is one of the reasons I don't have cable anymore. Aside from missing CNN, Discovery, and History I am very happy. That and because all southpark episodes can be watched for free online :D

VH1 is even worse than MTV, always has been....i stopped watching mtv after i got out of middle school....i think its funny how people model themselves after some of their favorite real world characters....its like their celebrities. But what they dont realize is that these people are on this show because they are perfect for making our culture into materialized, superficial BULL. Oh and you can forget about actual music, not that there was EVER any REAL music on that show anyways. Laughable really....what a joke. Anyone who watches that rubbish is doing nothing but making themselves more stupid...

I'm not sure thats entirely true. I think corporate America has a lot to gain by throwing this crap at our youth. Anyone dumb enough to watch this horrid excuse for entertainment, and actually find it worth watching, will be highly susceptible to all the subliminal (and overt) advertising and product placement that permeates television. They don't think enough to question the motives of those pumping MTV programming through the cable lines. Honestly I don't think their thoughts on the subject go beyond "This is what everyone else watches, so I'll watch it and LIKE it." Then every girl watching will HAVE to have the snazzy sneakers that the half naked, busty, big buttocked chick slutting around on screen is wearing.

As for the people who mentioned not having knowlege of today's MTV programming. . .

I've only watched MTV twice in the last six years or so (and before that I pretty much only watched Beavis and Butthead), neither by choice. The second time my freshman roomate, who was looking forward to joining his "awesome" fraternity, would leave his gaint 60" TV set on all night, always on MTV. What I caught a glimpse of was a "reality" show called "Next." The premise of this show, if I remember well enough (and believe me, I try not to), was that one guy or girl would be courted in succession by a number of members of the opposite sex.

The super duper twist was they'd have to complete certain brainless, pratfallish tasks to try to win over the love of the main guy or girl. each individual "suitor" would be introduced and, of course, have their own unique "fact." I remember one of the girls' unique fact was that she "ate her own poop once," or something to that effect. Thats hillarious - if everyone else if laughing and you have no self respect whatsoever.

All of the main people who were being courted made their decisions based on ridiculously shallow criteria, setting a wonderful model for the teenagers watching.

Of course damn near all of television is a stupid waste of time and I would say perhaps even morally reprehensible. But MTV. . .Jesus, that takes the cake, POOPS on it, then eats it right up.
