MSN Messenger broke

I tried reinstalling, tried other people's usernnames, I even turned off my fuckin' firewall for a lil' bit

I can't figure out what is wrong

I am getting error code 80048820
all it tells me is they could not sign me in, and it could be my firewalls' fault
their website and troubleshooter are of absolutely no help

what the fuck is up?

msn worked for me, but it said there's some new version i should download. I ignored it. last time I updated, it put two versions of msn on at once and tried to sign into both, making it crash itself and i had to reinstall the whole freakin thing after deleting both versions. msn is pooey, i just use it to see if i have new email (and to talk to a couple friends far far away, but they aren't usually on and neither am i)
