i'm moving to portland soon (from Hawai`i, so no driving ) and i'm basically taking everything with me on the plane or sending it USPS. i've got thirty or so lps that I'm talking with me and I am REALLY paranoid to the point that I'm probably going to take them all in my carry-on. anyone had any experience with mailing or putting vinyl in checked baggage?
shipping vinyl is notoriously expensive but people do it all the time. i'm not sure how though, if i were you i might email a small vinyl distributor and ask what shipping method they use.
thanks, thats a good idea. i knew there had to be a reliable way (or there'd be no online vinyl market) but i never thought to ask. although, ive never bought vinyl online for the same reason I won't ship it myself
I've put records in check baggage before, I just put them in a snug fitting thick cardboard box and taped it securly and surrounded with clothes in a suitcase, had no problems or damage through two flights. You can mail them to. Since they are records you can send them usps Media Mail, which is a lot cheaper the any other method but also slower.
I always imagine my suitcases in checked baggage being flung to the heavens and popping open and getting my stuff distributed everywhere as well as obliterated. Ha. But if you didn't have problems then I'll probably do the same. I really ought to get rid of that notion, anyway. I'm the same way with the mail ! thanks man, you've made me substantially less worried.
Just make sure to put layers of cardboard and clothes around the records, so any bumping around won't harm them. They also do make metal flightcases for records, like this one -
