"While we were sitting with the Prophet in the mosque, a man came riding on a camel. He made his camel kneel down in the mosque, tied its foreleg and then said: "Who amongst you is Muhammad?" At that time the Prophet was sitting amongst us (his companions) leaning on his arm. We replied, "This white man reclining on his arm." The an then addressed him, "O Son of 'Abdul Muttalib." Volume 1, book 3, Number 63. Narrated Anas bin Malik"

"This white man reclining on his arm." ???

    easy.

    It's a fictional story.

    doesn't have to make sense...

Well believe it or not Aryians actually came from syria - and iran
so its not unlikely that he was white -which is strange because Jesus is actually described as a black man in the bible - funny how things go roundabouts like that

probably means paler than his companions.
since the Historical Muhummad was a merchant, he would be lighter than those who were outside in labor all day.

add trade routes, and we are probably talking about a well-mixed race man./ (this is also my theory on the historical Joshua- model now called Jesus)

The mother of Osama bin Laden was from Syria and was quite fair, which is why Osama is fair skinned. There is a hierarchy in the Arab world that relates to skin color. The lighter the skin, the more beautiful. The darker, the opposite. This is most prevalent in Saudi Arabia. There is a terrible bias. In the professional area, even if a darker skinned Arab is more able, he will be passed over. Skin color also has much decision in marriage.

Why does it matter either way?

It shouldn't. It is human nature to look for the differences in each other.

I think just the historical point that was raised by the OP is interesting I never knew there was any doubt about the colour of the muslim prophet, I knew a lot of white christians deny Jesus was black - perhaps you should ask them why it matters so much - I'm an atheist so its just a matter of interest not a political point

    Jesus was black?
I thought he was semitic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_of_Jesus_Christ

    And does that matter either?

well they describe him in a way in the bible that leaves no doubt in many peoples minds
and no it doesnt matter and no I'm not making a rascist point I'm pointing out that a lot of people a great many people believe Jesus was black go read the descriptions in the bible - it doesnt mention him looking like a hippy at all - the pictures many christians think represent jesus are european painters representing him in a light that would appeal to european audiences between about the 5th century to about the 17th - same as in africa many black people have a picture of jesus that is a black man hanging on the wall of their house or church
