Safe so long as the grid on the front is intact. Its a similar frequency to a mobile phone so i'd guess putting a mobile phone in and closing the door would be a good test. If you can call the phone then it might need maintenance, theres probably a better test than that, but i think it'd work.

no dont turn the microwave on. Just put the phone in and close the door. If you can then call your phone the door is letting microwaves through. Well i think it would work anyway, they do work on a similar frequency.

Ideally you wont, I imagine there is some leakage I dont know what the limit is a microwave manual will probably say. The amount that escapes will be dependant on the hole size and thickness of the metal in the grid. Though as I say microwaves are easy things to block, im guessing the amount that escapes is tiny, far less I imagine then being outside when the sun is out

He was answering your question. It depends on the microwave. If his theory is correct, you can test it by sticking your cell phone in there, closing the door, and calling it from another phone. If it recieves the call, then yes, your oven is letting out microwaves. If it doesn't, then it's probably not letting out enough to be dangerous to most. If you have a newer model (one made in the last 10 years or so), you probably have no worries. But to mess with your mind a bit, I've got a friend who has two different types of cancer (lymphoma and leukemia, I do believe) and he theorizes it was from eating too much stuff from the microwave. Hmmmmm...

im not going to say they cause no harm because I cant say that for certain, but I cant see how they would. Just because its less obvious how it works doesnt mean its dangerous. As for cancer, I cant see how a microwave would give you cancer unless you makea regular habit of getting in with your food though the risk of cancer would be the least of your worries if that were the case. I guess its not beyond the realm of possibilities that the microwaves have some effect on the food but ive not heard of it.

Haha, well, it's never been an actual proven fact by him that he got cancer from it, it's just something he likes to tell people because the doctors can't figure out why else a 14 year old boy would pop up with cancer all over.

Thats a little scary any idea where it radiates from? I always assumed the door would be the source of any leakage. Though I always thought the holes looked quite small and obviously many times the skin depth.

The practical question is: Is the risk from microwaving food greater or less than the risk (including fire) of heating food using other methods?

Include the risk of burning yourself on hot cookware if you like.

I was listening to this "food/health expert" on Coast To Coast am,and this guy said that when you microwave food,it destroys all the nutrition that was in the food(making it bad for you).He even said that cell phones can cause brain tumors...He said cell phones should not be held near your head for more than a minute.Only use them when you really need to,like when you have car problems etc...
