    Do you play guitar?
How did you get into playing metal stuff?
    What did you learn first?

    :D

I gotsta ESP ltd f-50, but my first electric was a crappy fender. I also have a few acoustics, but my favorite is my alveraz.

I pretty much started out by learning a ton of metallica, all their stuff is pretty easy (minus some of the solos, which I'm just starting to get) and then moved on to megadeth and some of the simpler shred songs by Paul Gilbert and other people. (curse of the castle dragon is a lot of fun) oh, and ive been learning some avenged sevenfold too, their stuff can be pretty chalenging. As of today I can play all of the wicked end except for the solo.

I'd already been playing for a year when I got into metal, so when I give lesons to newer players, I usualy start them off with some easyer slayer songs, or stuff off the black album.

Edit: ozzy's stuff is also generaly pretty easy, his stuff with Randy Rhoads is the best though.

I got a Ibanez XPT700 Xiphos and a peavey bandit 112 amp about a month ago. I had been playing acoustic before that for about 7months.

I wanna get decent enough to play stuff like Death. I haven't been learning any tunes yet.

I have learned about 8 chords, all the scales and now I am on arpeggios.. which is going pretty good. Only a couple of weeks ago did I start to use my little finger (Pinkie!) at first I couldn't do anything with it.. now It feels wrong to not use it.

Did you guys learn chords, scales & arpeggios first?

I dislike playing chords. I should probably spend more time with them. They sound really nice but I just wanna get straight in there with the shredding.

    Do you have any tips?

    :D

    Thanks!

Na dude, I learned how to play all the pentatonic scales and stuff so I could solo, and you obviously need to know chords, but I just worked on learning songs before I got into the theory of it all. I think it's alot easyer to get through the boring shit once you can play decently, so it's not all boring stuff that you're learning. Otherwise I think I'd have gotten sick of it and quit, but if you have a strong enough resolve, then go ahead, itll make you better faster when you get some of that stuff down, the first few months will just suck.

I would recomend looking up tabs for easy stuff on the Internet if you havnt done that already, there are tons of free tabs online. I don't know how good you are, but enter sandman is a fun beginer metal song (lol, I like metallica, if you don't, look up some other easy song)

    good luck man

Lolz... The circle of fifths? I had to memorize that in my theory class, we had to draw one based on nothing on the tests.

    Or maybe it's a book?

I have looked up loads of tabs stuff. I tuned my guitar to a nice low B and played World Coming Down by Type O. That's about it. I didn't play all the song though.. so it doesn't count. But it's a well nice tuning.

I'm not really bored of it which is good news. I have a book of arpeggios by some loser looking dude. I'm going through all of them to help me get a bit more familiar with the frets and what not.

My husband plays drums.. I wanna learn this to play with him.. I don't think I will manage this for another year or so! haha :(

I will check out the enter sandman tabs! I'm not into Metallica.. I know the tune though. I like Apocalyptica's version.

I read an interview with Danny Spitz from Anthrax years ago where he encouraged metal players to take a year of Jazz or classical guitar lessons. Just for a frame of reference the following METAL players also either started out playing Jazz or have been studying Jazz on the side:
    Chris Poland (original lead Megadeth)
    Chris Brodrick (Megadeth)
    Kirk Hammett
    Zakk Wylde
    Alex Skolnick (Testament)
    Rocky George (Suicidal Tendancies)
    Steve Vai
    Danny Spitz (Anthrax)
    Page Hamilton (Helmet)
    Kerry King (Slayer)

Some Jazz players I've heard alot of Metal Guitarists mention in interviews:
John Mclaughlin (Especially check out the Mahavishnu Orchestra)
    Al Dimeola
Allen Holdsworth (Eddie Van Halen aknowledges ripping off 2 handed tapping from him)
    Shawn Lane
    Frank Gambale (Master Sweep Picker)

Alot of these guys have Instructional Videos out. Alot of them are on Netflix. I suggest checking them out from Netflix first to see if you like them. If you like them then buy them because they usually come with transcription booklets.

I am a Bass Player. I started out as a metal player and still play some metal to keep up my technique (16th notes at 160bpm is the same if it is Death or Charlie Parker). I studied Jazz for about 3 years. I'm 34 years old now and if I tried to start a metal band it would just be pathetic. But I still hear some metal stuff I really dig. I just heard Obscura the other day and even managed to get past the Cookie Monster vocals.

I'm not trying to convert anybody but reading these posts I figured I'd share some of the things I noticed some metal players have said in inteviews over the past 15 or so years. Everything helps.

    Peace Out,
    Rev J

    Suggeted Listening:
    Birds of Fire-Mahavsihnu Orchestra
Dreams of the Emerald Beyond-Mahavishnu Orchestra
    Casino-Al DiMeola
    Elegant Gypsy-Al DiMeola
    Road Games-Allan Holdsworth
    Metal Fatigue-Allan Holdsworth
Friday Night in San Francisco-Al DiMeola, John Mclaughlin, Paco Delucia (one of Zack Wylde's Favorite Albums. The song "Taz" by Black Label Society is inspired by this album)
Abstract Logic- Jonas Hellborg, Shawn Lane, Kofi Baker
Octave of the Holy Innocents- Jonas Hellborg, Michael Shrieve, Buckethead
    Art Metal-Jonas Hellborg
    Rama-Andy West
    Ohm-Chris Poland
    Spectrum-Billy Cobham
Extraction-Greg Howe, Dennis Chambers, Victor Wooten

These are all Jazz fusion albums that have the balls and agression of metal. Some of these albums have inspired top metal guitarists. Some of these albums have respected metal players on them (Chris Poland, Buckethead, Mattias 'Ia' Eklundh, Tommy Bolin, Toshi Iseda). To broaden your horisons next time you read an interview with your favorite musician when they mention their favorite guitarists or musicians check them out. Check out the influences of your influences.

    Peace Out,

Good info! I will check them tunes out asap.

I wouldn't mind learning classical guitar. I would love to be able to play stuff like Bach really well.

I borrowed a dvd set of Esteban. It's an instructional dvd of how to play guitar (mainly chords).. also a massive chord book.
I don't watch the dvd anymore. But I do use the book quite a bit. He is my secret hero. haha

clasical guitar is awsome... It can always get harder too.

If your gonna go acoustic, I also really love playing Laurence Juber's solo stuff. check out his cover of little wing, its tight. and also people like don ross, tommy emanuel, andy mckee, and stuff like that.

your pretty far away from that, but you can still listen to them and be inspired!

I've also heard Rodrigo y Gabriela are supposed to be off the hook. I think I read somewhere they did an arrangement of "Orion" by Metallica for just 2 classical guitars.

Thanks I will check it out!

I love listening to amazing stuff.. it does inspire me but also makes me rather jealous. Sometimes I then think what is the point in even trying to play I will never be that good! haha
