hey everyone i've just moved to melbourne and it rocks, but i'm wondering if anyone knows of some good hippy hangouts around the city or the burbs. Anyway peace
i've lived in melb for quiet a while now and i've been asking myself that same question! i think that there are just too few hippies around here to accomodate a hang out place. if there is i'de like to know 2.
I'd like to know too, i'm planning to move there in a few months. What are the best suburbs to live in?
G'day guys, I just came back from Melbourne. Depending on what you call "hippies", you may find some nice people in many places either in Brunswick street (in Fritzroy) or in St Kilda. I've heard about a community in Northcote as well. According to me Melbourne is the best Australian city to meet "happy-hippie" poeple and have a beautiful connection with many Confesters.
Northcote is good... lotsa art fag cafes, not as many as Brunswick street though, that place is like artfag central. I really reccomending going to Norflendz and shouting "FULLY SICK ULEH!" over and over in a really pronounced and mocking way, people will love you for it.
i dont think you understand the concept of "art fag". and there is deffinately alot of hippies on brunswick st.
haha wow i just came back from melbourne today, now im back in boring sydney, i was looking for brunswick st, but i thought it was in the suburb if brunswick haha so i never found it, and as it was the last day i had to go home melbourne seems so much nicer than sydney though, we stayed at a really cool backpacker place that let you smoke weed there and we were allowed to go to the bar and order drinks even though we were 15, we met so many great people at that place and everyone seems really friendly when we went, it even seemed like we were the only australians there haha. i think its called the "bakpak melbourne" on franklin st.
Yeah Brunswick street is pretty cool. But if you want 'real' hippies (ie people who practice what they preach) then you have to leave the city and head out Warrandyte way. There is a freaking awesome market on every saturday at a place called St Andrews about an hour from Melbourne. (no public transport unfortunately)
Brunswick street is pretty wanktastic. So is St Kilda. Good food though, just a bunch of designer hippies and muzteks. Northcote and Brunswick (the suburb) has got a great vibe but unless you are talkin Eumundi or Nimbin it's pretty strange to assume there will be a suburb full of hippies. I've lived on both sides of the river and they've both got their good points but the "wrong" side is definitely better for the more alternative crowd.
South Northcote, in the Westgarth area is a very laid back community, much like the Brunswick St culture.
Norhtcote. To be more accurate, Westgarth in Northcote, I live two doors down from a full on hippy cafe.
I see lots of people complaining that they don't know many people with the same interests and stuff, so like, i thought i might .. try .. Anyone round my age (14-16) who is into the hippie life-style and wants to meet at the gardens in the city of melbourne, send us a message, and like we should get a group together and we can rip a few, have laughs and dance to my awesome bongos.. Just an idea, and i dont want any evil hissing people who want to start trouble. That's why i posted in this peaceful forum. Drop us a line if you interested.. Laters, Peace, love. Billie
I totally second charbono on the St Andrews market, one of the best markets I have ever had the pleasure of going to, lots of bongos and music on the hill as the day wanders on...that was a few years ago though but I am sure it is still kicking along! The other place which I found was great for meeting really nice people was CERES which is just a cool place to hang out at in the city but if you want to meet people getting involved will certainly work here! http://www.ceres.org.au/index1024x768.htm Time and good vibes will also help you meet a community of likeminded people too in Melbourne!
My girl and I are thinking of starting a stall at St Andrews selling screen printed T-shirts, we just have to get some more equipment. CERES sounds interesting. I've lived just up the road for about 6 years and didn't even know about it!
