uh-oh, I think I have it or am getting it. Yesterday one of my boobs started feeling sore and this morning it's very sore on one side and I have a headache which feels like a pre-fever headache, my eyes kind of hurt like they do when I'm sick and my back hurts, although I slept fine last night. I'm asking you guys first because i don't have a doctor to go to. my medicaid quit two months ago. What should I do? I'm remembering something about nursing more on the side that feels sore, so I'll do that. I think I'm gonna go take a shower. I'm starting to feel crappier...

Sounds like you might,I had it after my first born, I felt absolutely horrible ~ fever,aches.......Midwife told me to get on antibiotics asap. As SOON as I did all was good and I felt much better....If you can't afford the meds there might be home remedies, I never looked into it though. Good luck mama and you have a beautiful 'lil babe there btw!

sounds like a plugged duct. it'll turn into mastitis if left untreated. what i do when i've got a plugged duct is massage the breast as i'm feeding from it, especially during a let down, massage it good, it might hurt but you really need to unplug that duct. take as many hot showers as you can. just stand there under the running hot water and massage your breast. nurse, nurse, nurse as much as babe will let you. gravity helps too. i've been known to get on all fours and hover over babe while feeding her from the sore breast. upping you vit c and other immune boosting suplements can always help too...echinatia, garlic, water etc...

thanks colorfulhippie! I'm feeling more tired and heavy now, plus I have to babysit a five year old this afternoon, along with my baby. it shouldn't be too hard, but i definitely am feeling crappy about it. it does hurt when i touch it, but i'll try massaging it. that sounds like the best thing to do. I can't get ahold of any supplements, but I'll surely drink tons of water.

Ooo, movie day for the 5 yo ;) It'll hurt, but just keep massagin and nursing. To me, it's like when you have a super sore muscle from working out or something and it hurts at first to move the muscle or massage it, but then once you start using it it feels SOOOOOOOOOOOO good LOL

Another tip is to position babe so that his nose is pointing to the sore spot while nursing. I think this is a way of sorta stretching that sac or something. I dunno, but I always do it cuz it won't hurt LOL.

Also, when I'm trying to treat something by drinking extra water, I make it a goal to drink so much water that my pee is still cold LOL

I love your siggy by the way :)

You can get REALLY sick, really fast, from mastitis. I'd cancel the babysitting. The best thing you can do is to get into bed with the baby, a bottle of water, and a salty snack, and a heating pad. Really, eat something with some salt. Not enough sodium in your body can predispose you to mastitis.

I usually let the mamas I work with have 24 hours (or until the fever hits 102) to home treat, and then get to a doctor (or call one, if you can do that) any way they can.

Cloxicillian or Dicloxicillian are the best meds for Mastitis. Amoxil is useless, worse than useless, because it only kills off the weak bacteriia and then you get a superinfection. Augmentin is OK, if you are allergic to 'cillians.

Can anyone call a doctor and get some Diclox for you? Until then KEEP NURSING, you have to keep that milk flowing, drink water, (not enough to make yourself sick, though) take Motrin, (up to 600 mg every 5-6 hours with food, that's 3 OTC tablets) eat something salty, use WARM compresses, if you can be in the bathroom, or use a heating pad in bed, and put a washcloth under it, with a large piece of plastic wrap or plastic bag between the heating pad and the wet washcloth, and put the cloth NEXT TO your body. Put it on for about 5-10 minutes and leave it off for about the same amount of time.

If your fever goes high, or you start to vomit or you see a red line or red dot on your breast, you will need to get medical care. But, even with treatment, the best treatment is to keep nursing. (Diclox helps a LOT, too.) Don't let anyone tell you to stop, the baby cannot get the infection in your breast (mastitis is an Interstitial Infection, what that means is.....well, he can't get it) and the meds won't hurt him either.

Some mama swear by Byronia Homeopathic tablets, the higher strength the better, but don't go out, if you don't have any in the house, is there anyone you can send out for you?

Don't overhydrate yourself, you can make yourself sicker. Just drink a little more water than you normally do. Don't "push" yourself to drink, just make sure you are getting about 8 8 oz glasses a day, plus a little more.

    Please take care of yourself.

well Lily was really good today. i told her how I was sick and she helped me out however she could and grandma helped by hanging out with her sometimes, which I really appreciated because usually grandma gets kind of annoyed with her. I can't really just cancel babysitting, it's the only money I make right now and there really was no one else to watch her.

don't worry, i won't over do the water. I usually drink a lot of water, so I wasn't worrying about it, but I just made sure to drink some whenever I thought of it.

I called the doctor today and his nurse told me to just rest and drink water and nurse and if I develop a fever to call her. So we'll see how things are tomorrow.

Thanks so much, guys, I'm already feeling better!

Looks like you headed this mastitis off at the pass. Good job, Tamee. Continue to take it easy for a while. Make sure you get enough salt and enough fluid (if sounds like you do) and keep nursing that baby.

Good job. Feel better tomorrow. More than today. :) :) :)
