forwarded message follows, Jeff Briere is the UU minister in Chattanooga:

While my church and its minster will not instruct anyone on how to vote, you can rest assured I will preach about social justice around the issue of marriage equality.
The ballot in November asks voters to approve an amendment to the Tennessee constitution which excludes same-sex couples from the civic, spiritual, emotional and financial benefits of marriage that are now enjoyed by heterosexual couples. I believe this amendment, if approved, will hurt more people than it will help. As a matter of fact, it will help no one. To organize against its passage, therefore, is something that I can do from a religious and theological stand.

I send you this message to alert you to an organizational meeting on Friday August 18th at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Chattanooga at 7 pm. A representative of the Tennessee Equality Project will speak. You can find more information here. <

If you can attend, great. Hope to see you there. If you have another engagement, please alert anyone you know who is interested in this issue.

If only I lived in TN. At least we have equality in Massachusetts for the time being though. It doesnt seem to have changed things much, I see no fireballs flying from the sky to punish us for allowing it. I also only see more people contributing better to our society by things such as adoption. With thousands of kids up for adoption and few people to take care of them how can we ban gay people from adoption?

I support all gay rights accept the right to marry. Do what you like in the privacy of your own homes, but don't expect the government to allow you the same rights as an actual marriage ( you know the whole man & wife thing ). That being said opinions are like a-holes...everyone has one and they all stink.

it's not about that at all. It's about the government making laws solely to discriminate against a group of people, which is so wrong I can't even express my anger about it. It's like passing a law saying that white people can't play basketball, or women shouldn't be allowed to vote.

why are you singling out the marriage part of it?? why do YOU think it's wrong for gay people to be married...is it an opinion of your own, or is it just something you read in your Bible??

I am going to keep my reasons for being againsy gay marriage to myself. Not only is my opinion strictly from the hetro point of view, but I don't have incrredibly strong convictions about this.

One other thing... I don't believe the government should need to make or pass laws that prohibit intersex marriage. I believe that laws should have to be made that allow such a thing. just a thought, perspective wise.

i'm sorry about what I said about the whole Bible thing..i kinda felt bad about that, but i really do want to hear your opinion on why you're against it..i'm for it because you just need to let people be...if they're not harming you in any way, let them be, you know?? so, please share your opinion :)
