    Mariposa
You told me the word "mariposa"
    made you thinkof the sea,

and I sawa flight of monarchs
    above a corn field
    in Oaxaca,

    orange and black
    against blue
    ocean of air,

    white clouds
    like the crests of waves.

A magical, extended image! That's exactly what good poetry should offer. Keep it up!

In Ontario, Mariposa has very long roots and an incandescent reputation. It was the name given the famous folk festival that used to be a huge annual event years ago. It was held in Stephen Leacock's hometown of Orillia. Wish I'd got to be there!
