He had good music in his day. But his attitude absolutely stinks and as a result of abusing his band members and them leaving I couldn't care less about his recent music or him. Mechanical Animals was the best album he's ever done.

I don't like him as an artist. Not that rock 'n roll couldn't use some shock value at the time but in my opinion that's the only thing he's good at and a good rock act needs more. I don't know him very well so I don't have an opinion about his person or life. I don't judge people by their freakiness but some freaky persons can be utterly annoying in their urge to express their selfinvented unique-ness. Marilyn Manson looks like such a person to me but as I said I don't know shit about his personality.

The problem with Manson is that yeah, he couldn't make a career based on shocking people his whole life, in addition to treating band members like shit. But I've seen him live twice, with Slayer for his Eat Me, Drink Me tour, and last year at Mayhemfest, and he stole the show both times. His stage presence is sick, and as soon as he jumps on he commands everybody. I remember being in fourth grade when The Dope Show video came out, and I was the only person championing "That guy who has boobs".

You hit upon why I never cared for him, he was a marketing genius rather than a musician. I read a terrific article on Marilyn in Rolling Stone, near the zenith of his popularity. I wouldn't know how to find it now, though I wish I could to back up my opinion.

Anyway the idea put forth in the article was that he chose subjects for his music that would garner the most attention, hot buttons, rather than a desire to express himself, i.e. anti-Christian anthems. His persona was another hot button, calculating a look, and a name, that would be the most repellent to the greatest number of American parents and mainstream adults. Sprinkle in a couple catchy "disaffected youth" songs (see "The Beautiful People") and you have a media sensation rather than an "artist". He was a terrific manipulator.

Yes, I know, all of that can be chalked up to cardinal rules of marketing rock music, but the author contended Marilyn was a wizard in his own right, rather than being subverted by his label. It's a cynical point of view, but the evidence was there, including his lifestyle away from the media. He played his audience. I know, oh shock, a performer who wasn't genuine.

As to the post I quoted, I guess he missed a marketing opportunity after 9/11. He could have exploited anti-Muslim sentiment to great effect, but then, that might have been more accepted by the mainstream, thus rendering him a sell-out?

Anyway, that's my opinion, for what it's worth.

When he was really popular with 'Antichrist Superstar' and 'Mechanical Animals' I didn't pay much attention to him and I don't really care about the whole shock shtick but he has some decent music.

Marilyn Manson is a very intelligent person. His way of dressing for the most part throws a lot of people off. If you look up some interviews of him on youtube you might be surprised. Another thing is his negativity towards christianity. I personally don't care, but i can understand someone of that faith who might despise him. He thinks that religion as a whole is a joke in every way. He points out time and time again that people are very gullible and don't think for themselves anymore (i have much respect for him in that way).

As a musician he is just as intelligent. He was huge in the 90's for sure. I don't like all of his music but he is very talented.

He is a prefect example, of what the evil the media does to someone who doesn't dress like everyone else.

Same here but to be honest I was in six grade and he was freaky looking so I stay away. But now I like a few songs. His guitarist John 5 is a excellent chicken picking guitar player.

Also.. I like seeing interviews with him.. And a few of his songs are good, but you have to be a total fag to be one of his die hard fans.

How by that argument is he not an artist? Art doesn't always have to be abstract and it certainly doesn't always have to be completely personal. Often there is a very real relationship between art and reality, and what you might call exploiting 'hot buttons' i would still call art, even if the issues weren't that close to home for him.

Although personally, I think news media and other things of the like cross the blurry line that is art.

However, having said that, I've always liked his music more then his philosophies.

He's definitely one of a kind. Cool music, interesting style and AMAZING live shows, His music takes me back:)

I have always said that I think lady gaga copied much of mansons character and sort of applied it to a different scene. (but I cant fucking stand gaga!!)

I love his albums, have them all. Call me a fool, but it's true

I don't give too big a shit about his personality or the themes he sings about- a little crap never hurts anyone.
