I would like to grow opium producing poppies, and extract opium from them, but I have very little knowledge on the subject. I have created this thread in hopes to get knowledge and advice from people more experienced than myself This is what I know: Once the flower petals have fallen off of the plant and the pods turn a whitish-green color, they are ripe for harvest. Cut vertically (not deep just barely through the skin) and let the sap ooze out. wait for sap to harden then scrape off with knife. All of this I have learned from watching videos, but what I would like to know is what to do after I have the raw sap. Is it smokeable at this stage? Or does it need to be further processed. I am trying to produce opium, not morphine or heroin, any knowledge or advice is much appriciated!
You got it. Once your sap is dry it's ready to smoke. from another board: "I just grow the pods (hen and chick variety) and let them do their thing. Then after the petals fall off, I usually wait for a week, then I give them one good slice along the TOP of the bulb. Then, I don't collect the resin but I let it "Scab" over. Afetr two more days, I cut them down (Low on the stalk) and put them in a cedar coat closet to dry. It takes about two weeks for them to dry all the way. After that, you can make Tea's, Extract's,Tincture's,Putty or just eat 'em whole like I do sometimes. The reason I slice along the top of the pod is to limit the amount of latex that leaks out. Also, when I slice them, I do it rather deeply, so that the latex drains INTO the pod instead of outside the pod. Then after this is done I wait so the pods can "fill up". I do it this way because it is easier and less work than scraping the pods over and over and over. "
his method is only for making the drink, smoking it is much more fun IMO , also tastes a heck of a lot better, but a pod will almost always give off milk, but it doesnt mean that it has any goodies in it, make sure you stop watering it as soon as the pod appears.
Yeah, it's not hard. Letting them dehydrate stresses them out and they'll produce more goodies that way, a lot more. You can harvest opium from the same pod 2-3 times usually, with less each time, but it's still worth it if you're serious. Be careful though, leaving sliced opium poppies in plain view of really anyone is taking a chance. That's explicitly illegal. Even growing a lot of them in a small area is obviously going to be suspicious.
depends, some varieties grow more quickly, such as persian whites or afghans, they usually produce a larger amount of small pods. It takes roughly three months for from the moment you plant until the time they are ready to be cut. But, depending the conditions it may vary by 2-3weeks. Its really not worth all the trouble/time/risk there are plently of sources for pods, and unless you live in the country with a large amount of land and the ability to plant hundreds of poppies you won't really be getting much.(for sale at least)
The grocery store seeds may be of the "low morphine" variety to thwart people from getting opiates out of them. They certainly grow, I had hundreds, but they all died due to poor soil drainage.
Yeah, but its possible to alter them so they produce little to no opium. Err little of the 'good stuff'. Your a lot better off finding somewhere that sells them online. Preferably a place that has a few varieties of P. somniferum.
what do you mean by "alter them" all they do is wash them off before packaging, thats why you look for varieties that have been known not to wash their seeds, but bulk stores sell unwashed seeds, but i think you might as well just get pods... one dose of pods is like 5-8(large ones)(for a strong dose with tolerance) and you can buy like 35 big pods for about 40bucks.
For those looking to order some seeds, i got some persian white seeds off bouncingbearbotanicals a while back. Its a great site, check it out.
So like i got som opium poppies growing like 2 or 3 dozen is this enough and if so how do i reap the medicinal benifits of this wonderful flower?
