I'm gonna go a little more modern and say when rap first took over and throughout the crunk phase; it wasn't complete trash. pop was bearable; some post-grunge bands were pretty neat though not amazing (Queens of the Stone Age come to mind); the The bands were threatening to bring back rock'n'roll; Kings of Leon were a blues rock band; nu-metal wasn't a complete joke yet; Eminem was going downhill, but still had some good ones; T.I. didn't have multiple personalities; Dipset broke into the mainstream at their strongest ever (right before losing all touch with their talent);
Don McLean was wrong. Everyone knows that Disco killed good music. I've found that what kind of music is popular depends upon what kind of drugs are popular at any given moment. We went from the hippie music scene fueled by marijuana and LSD to the disco music scene fueled by cocaine and quaaludes to the punk music scene fueled by heroin and god knows what to the Rap Music Scene fueled by crack to the Rave Music Scene fueled by Ecstasy to the crap we have now probably fueled by prescription drugs. It's all crap since the early 70s. Unless you happen to enjoy different drugs than I...
august 1922 when a new york radio station sold it's first advert ...... and it's been about making money ever since :mickey:
Agreed. When disco finally died out I thought music would get good again, but with few exceptions it's been fair to poor.
depends which mainstream you mean, mainstream pop has mostly always been shit for the teenage girls.. Mainstream rock isnt too bad, theres some good shit coming out, Black keys etc. I dont know I think it went down hill when musical artists stopped being drug abusing alcoholics.
Theres so much good music still alive though New albums to be on the lookout for: Blink 182 Kottonmouth Kings - Sunrise Sessions (hope this new record is more lyric-friendly and psychedelic/trippy-based) Bush - Everything always now Incubus - If not now when (why in the world did such a good band choose such a bad name?!? Lol) Metacritic is the best website to stay updated on the new upcoming music release dates. They are always pretty on-point, and keep you in the loop as far as who is releasing what when

Oh, and I agree with Skip. Once the acid and the marijuana went, the good music went with it. Don't take my word for it, listen to Bill Hicks - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J10w3FuCwfQ"]YouTube - bill hicks drugs and music‏
acid and marijuana are not more or less an influence in music today. than it was 30/40yrs ago.. Its all in your head...
I gotta disagree. Maybe the drugs had nothing to do with it, but there considerably less talent around now, when drugs are frowned upon, than in the late sixties/early seventies, when use of marijuana and acid was more widespread and accepted. Just saying...
