ok so iv been plannijng on making a sog in a big attic that i can accese from my room, i was planning on have 2 different light areas, one for the vegy stage and the other for the flowering stage. what kinda of lights what i need to use for each stage, i was thinking for the flowering stage id use a hps lamp. how big of one would i need for 8 plants and what type of light should i use for the vegy stage plants. thx
Veg - Metal Halide Flower - High Pressure Sodium How hot does your attic get? For 16 plants (assuming you meant 8 per room) depends on how big you want to grow them (how tall is the attic?). If you want to keep them under 3 feet, a 250-400w MH, and 2x400w or better 2x600w for flowering. Pricey eh
umm the attic is 5 ft tall so ya under 3 feet, and in the summer itd prob could get up to 100 but im going to put a fan blowing when the lights r on and a vent. system on the other side of the plants.
Oh it'll get over 100 in the summer. You'll need to have good ventilation, try to bring air into the attic if you can
I usually flower 8 plants under a 400 watter, and the size of my space is 2ft by 4ft, with about 6 feet of headroom. For veg you have plenty of options, you could get a 250w mh if you wanted, but that could also need to be well cooled. Some t5 floros would do the trick and run pretty cool, but those are also expensive. The other guys are right, it'd gonna be hot in the summer up there. Considering how hot that attic is gonna be, any HID lights are gonna been to have aircooled hoods on them. You may also need an AC up there, this depends where the intakes for your ventilation are coming from. If air is being drawn for the attic itself, which is hot, then yes you are going to need a AC unit up there. However if air is being drawn from downstairs (assuminbg that area is airconditioned) then you won't need an AC unit in the attic. I think that you might need to spend a little more than $400. If you shop online for your equipment you will save some money, but I usually like to go to the hydro store and spend more just because it's an in and out type deal. Always pay cash, never use a credit card ever. Don't worry too much about how much money you are dropping on your setup. Just by you not having to buy sacks, it will pay for itself (atleast) with the first harvest. Peace and good luck.
ya i could prob scrong up around 600$ and it wont take long for me to get my money back chronic where i live is $60 a 1/8 so ya ill have no prob
CFL's are great and they don't get hot like the other lights do. That is what I am going for since I'm paranoid about starting a fire. They're wicked cheap and you won't have to spend as much on ventilation either.
Consider dropping the mh for veg and get cfl lighting, it's enough for veg and saves alot on the heat. if ya dont believe me find the "green man's growing hydro" or whatever on youtube, he's vegging under flourescents and flower with HPS.. And that shit gets hot. get a squirrel-cage fan and put your exhaust in the chimney if you can..
oh. and get the right light spectrum for the cfl lights, the green man says cool white and warm white, I say look at the temperature, should be 6500K or 865, thats what they call it over here in europe..
Growing in the attic is likely to be way easier in the spring, fall, and winter. A free-standing AC would be ideal, but they cost about $300.
