I noticed that when I play a game on my laptop it gets insanely hot. So hot that my skin begins to burn when I hold my fingers next to the CPU vent. When it gets really hot the game starts to "lag" and I have no choice to quit the game. So basically it gets so hot that it affects system performance.

Question is, will this damage my laptop or its components?

Excess heat will hurt things inside the laptop. If the laptop shuts itself off because of the heat, it is overheating. This is very bad for it. If it "lags" (aka processor or gpu scaling) when hot, it is running too hot and can be just as bad or even worse for the laptop.

Try blowing out all the holes with compressed air. Elevating is a good idea if you want to play games on it. Also, you can set it on a hard, flat surface to give it more breathing space. I use a notebook under my laptop if I have it sitting on a bed. There are cooling pads you can buy for laptops, but they mostly help with the outside surface temps. Cooling pads do little more for the internal temps in comparison with a flat surface.

Beyond cleaning out the inside with compressed air, you would need to service it. When using the can of air, make sure to shutdown and then pull the battery out. If you can, put something in the fan hole to hold the fan still. Blowing compressed air through might make the fan rotate way faster than it should and can damage it. Also, holding it still can be better for clearing out any dust or hair or whatever is in there.

You are going to fry your hard drive if you keep letting it get that hot.

Thank you for the responses. When I was using it yesterday I elevated it by setting it on top of a case that blank dvds come in. It seemed to work fairly well, as the exterior wasn't as hot as it sometimes gets not to mention their was a noticable increase in performance. Looked kind of silly having it up that high though lol :p

Im considering a cooler. There are reports of some of them lowering temps 10+ degrees celcius. Thats certainly better than nothing.

Im sure it doesn't help that its like 30 degrees outside and I have no AC :(

Is it bad to sit your laptop on your lap? I should mention I have balls. Hence why I'm asking the question.

Well yeah. Laptops are warm and your balls are on the 'outside' of your body to keep them cool.

fuck, there plenty of rules about what you should and should not do with your balls.

You should do what Adderall_Assasin suggested.

My laptop was hitting 190 degree and higher. Fan was on full blast.
And all I was doing was running VirtualBox (XP) and watching a movie.
Shut down on me a couple times from overheating (including while a disk was formatting lol).
I used a can of compressed air and it is like a brand new machine. Doesn't get hot anymore. Just give it a try.

The heat from a laptop can significantly lower your sperm count.
