Just saw it. Overall a good movie, starts a little slow and at times it's disjointed and confusing, but then again so were the Pranksters. An interesting crowd at the theatre, both old & young hippies. Anyway it's worth a look so go see it, or wait til it comes out on DVD, or maybe the History Channel will eventually show it.
greattt movie. really learned a lot more than i originally thought. i wish i couldda hung out with ken and the pranksters back in the day.
it's very similar to the book. the book just basically tells the story of the merry pranksters and their wild antics, and the movie has footage of their crazy antics. basically its the same thing.
Don't go see this movie. I just went to and saw the movie on Friday, 9/9/2011. I enjoyed it. (Of course I'm 61) It was the long awaited visual. My girlfriend said that they didn't explain enough for stuff to make sense. [And they did explain a whole lots] It was not something exciting. If you go and see it, don't expect much. It's like how do you explain an acid trip to someone who's never dropped. Forget it. I don't recommend this movie to anyone. Especially most of the people who show up on this forum website. I think they may be sorely disappointed. Expecting wild excitement and thrills or something. This whole thing in like much more underground secretive hip, and most people today would never understand that concept, at all. It's just to different and to way back when, for you. If you do go and see it: It is highly recommended that you read the entire large book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, first, so that you might have a clue. This book is a must. Especially before trying to get the movie. Go read first. This tells you so very much more. Then, with a greater understanding, go out and really enjoy the Magic Trip Movie. Dig it. Scorpio Kenny :sunny:
You enjoyed it but you don't recommend it to anyone? Okay. Still you make a good point, reading The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test first will definitely enhance your viewing pleasure.
Yeah, I think that you get what I mean. I'm an old Freak. I love it but it wasn't Earth shaking. It was great to see that real thing. My Lady is 48 and hip but not a total hippie. She liked it, but said even with all of there fill-in background information, (and there was a whole lot) that there was still not enough background information presented for ether the reasonably informed let alone the average viewer to get the movie, and to enjoy it completely.
Yes, this is a totally historical movie. Yes, read The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, before going to see this movie. Get a cheap used copy of the book at half.com. Read the whole thing. I think that to any younger hippie or even any old hippies who didn't live right in the thick of things back when, should get the deep understandings (read The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test) before seeing the movie. The Magic Trip Movie is like the last chapter of the book, without reading all of the other chapters first. Like, as if to say, "I didn't get it." You know what I mean. I think that most folks won't appreciate the movie fully. WAY MOST.
Don't get me wrong here. Everyone should get and read the whole book, and then go and see the movie as soon as possible after finishing their reading. Awesome movie, but you need the book info in order to understand everything well.
Just saw this movie last night and it was good. I have read the Electric Kool-aid Acid Test and it is a great pre-requisite to the movie. If you were to watch the movie and not read the book, you would still understand what was going on for the most part, but the book adds a whole new dimension that is not laid out in the movie. I agree with this. If I have never taken an acid fuelled road trip before, or never read the book I would have still enjoyed the movie, but on a completely different level.
