Jyotish, (also called Vedic) astrology is the oldest astrological system currently used beside perhaps the Chinese. It is of Indian/Hindi origion, and is practiced all over India. The main differences between Western astrology and Vedic astrology is this. The sun is the most important planet in Western astrology. In Vedic astrology the moon has this distiction. This difference profoundly affects the way the horoscope is done up and interpreted. Also of great importance is the fact that Vedic astrology is based on the sidereal zodiac and not the tropical zodiac. The difference is profound. A persons sidereal planets can be in the sign before or after the tropical position. A Pisces becomes an Aries, etc. That is why I do not use the sidereal positions for planets. The sidereal zodiac take into account the procession of equinoxes though, and reflects to true positions of the constellations. The actual constellations of the zodiac have shifted over the centuries. This shift is called the procession of the equinoxes. The true positions of the zodiac signs as they appear in the sky today are called the sidereal zodiac. Tropical astrology is the system that continues to use the position of the signs as they were when western astrology first started. Jyotish astrology is considered superior by many astrologers at predicting events. It is sometimes looked at thus as fortune telling by western astrologers. There are also about 28 houses in Vedic astrology, all connected to the movement of the moon. They are called lunar houses.
