Not really. Even if we hadn't declared independence from the British, the Native Americans still would have lost their land. The British would have taken it.
here is where i will post lyrics from "Pride of Man", by Quicksilver Messenger Service... "...It will cause your tower to fall, make of you a pyre of flame. oh you who dwell on many waters, rich in treasure, wide in fame. you bow unto your god of gold. your pride and might will be your shame. for only God can lead his people, back unto the Earth again..."
The Native Americans were just going to get screwed either way. I am excited though because the government just gave some land around here back to the Native Americans. It's not much, but at least it's something.
They gave some of the land back?!?! wow... that was so nice of them. have you ever been to an indian reservation? i was.... i helped bury an aunt there (shoveling dirt, etc.)- these people are NOT happy there and have all kinds of problems (which im sure you know, not saying you dont).... but, it was THEIR land first. what right did we have to put them into reservations? makes me fucking sick. you always hear about the problems with lots of ethnicity groups in the U.S. but the natives.... well, the 1% of the population that is left.... they arent really heard of and i think as a culture they are depressed....
You're right, Trish. Native Americans have probably been treated more unjustly than any minority group in America, including African-Americans. Yet you see no organizations or people willing to stand up for them, which is indeed sad. But unfortunately, that's history. History isn't pretty. But, at least some of them now own casinos and probably have a lot more money than I ever will.
This whole entire area by where I live is a reservation. Mostly the Yurok. There are a couple different casinos here too Pretty much the only people around here who aren't white, are Native American. There is a branch of my science major that is about helping with Native American rights. I've been considering changing over to that branch instead of the technology branch, but I am unsure. It definitely makes me angry that they are pretty much ignored.
Things on the reservations here seem to be pretty nice. Although the damn farmers and ranchers are always trying to take all the water from the rivers, which will make it so that the Native Americans can't do their salmon fishing. But they do get to live in extremely beautiful surroundings, so that is something. But I've seen some really sad looking places on reservations. Places where all the buildings are just shacks that are barely holding together.
that's cool. i dont have that much experienced with reservations but i know they have their problems (the limited experience/knowledge that i do have)..... it was just funny hearing you say "i'm happy we gave some of the land back" well, yeah, it's better then nothing but that really is just like water in the bucket. no, fuck the bucket.. im talking about the sea.
