im dont kno wat u guys think, but i personally dont think john lennon was overrated as a great example of a hippie. I think its pretty easy for a multimillionaire who drives a rolls-royce to say hes not materalisic and that "all u need is love". Im not saying he wasnt a good musician, but i dont think he was that great of a hippie. I think ppl like ken kesey, timothy leary, and abbie hoffman should be more recognized.
not to be a jerk here but couldn't you put anyones name in there and find something to debate about? Isn't it clear that there is no one epitome of "real hippie" I doubt lennon called himself a hippie, but he was cool for just doing his own thing. "hippie" is truely in the eye of the beholder. I'm not trying to take away the intentions of this post either. I Just don't like stereotypes. That is a good piont however.
u have a good point.. i wasnt saying lennon called himself a hippie, its just i thinkt aht he shouldnt have been one of the main faces of the counterculure.. he was cool tho and i even quote him in my signature
Awe, that's cute. He never drove a Royce when he wrote the song you quoted in your original post. You should reall do some research about him before you judge him for his possessions. I can tell you right now, if I got 6 million dollars, I'd buy a LOT of things. But that doesn't mean it would change my heart, nor would it hinder me from donating and protesting. John Lennon was a wonderful man.
true hippie - a person who lives by the Golden Rule. Someone who believes in allowing others to pray to any god, sleep with any consenting "adult," eat, drink or ingest whatever and dance to any music. True hippies are evolutionaries, not revolutionaries; we will convince you with words, not weapons. We believe passionately in democracyand free enterprise (not capitilism). We will not go to war for peace; we will love the world into it, talk people into it or shame them into it. Some people may think we are a joke; they may think we are naive, or that we are unrealistic, but we have high ideals. Some may think we have ulterior motives, some agenda to make ourselves rich and take over the world, but that is only their value system speaking; we have no other reason for our actions than to see peace, prosperity and love for all. That will be our reward. We are everywhere, and some day, if the world wises up, it will listen to us. September 11, 2001, would never have happened if people had listened to us 30 years ago. Taken from "The Hippie Dictionary" - written by John Basset McCleary.
I hear you say that over and over, but it seems you have nothing to support that. Why do you come into these threads to be a dick? Just stay out of them if you don't like them.
timothy leary worked for the goverment for quite awhile, so you could say he was even less hippy like than any of the ones you mentioned. the most hippiest I have ever seen was my sisters ragedy ann and andy dolls
" we play with more color than the africans " ~ Lennon i read that somewhere...in an old 60's pamphlet about the new wave of music...just thought i'd throw it in here. @
You don't think the "hippie" style was a fashion in the 60s?? Come on, man! What do you want me to support it with? It's not really a horrible thing that it was a fashion, but when you look at where I'm coming from, and then the thread title, you'll understand. It's hard not to act like a "dick" when there are tons of these moronic threads.
the beatles to me seemed to have been more of a "pop" group of the time that evolved and changed with the times....they became hippie when it was all out there...they were clean cut when that was out there...idk.i mean thats just my oppinion
