I must admit, I'm getting a little fed up with the peace sign. I feel it's holding us back to a bygon era of protest. The past is gone, and I want the protest movement to reinvent itself. Enough of that dumb symbol!

by the peace sign do you mean the campaign for nuclear disarmament logo?

The hand gesture, or the symbol. The hand gesture has lost its meaning, but i think the peace symbol still defines the peace movement.

If anything time makes a symbol more powerful, it's meaning will always be known now.

No teh peace sign isn't outdated at all.

Remember back in the day when all the hippies went out into the streets and had peace sign necklesses and chains and face paint, and then the cops got out the tear gas and starting clubbing all the hippies?

It was a better time....too bad I wasn't one of those cops, god damnit!

It's been replaced with the 911 ribbons, the ones that blur sympathy for the 911 deaths with support for the latest U.S. invasions.

    ^ truth

funny how they say "I support our troops" when they should say "I do not support war"

someone should make them and sell them.

Impeach the bastard that sent them to die overseas.

I wasn't reffering to the hand sign, I meant the symbol that nerthus mentioned. I wouldn't put one on my car, clothes, or skin, because I no longer wish to be associated with the 60's. I'm just saying that I wish my genertion could be defined on it's own terms instead of living in the shadow of the last.

Anyone but me really like that new logo used in the ads on tv that say don't promise what you can't deliver. The pink donkeyass kicking connected to the elephant head. I haven't see one for a while. So I can't find out who they are. But that logo was fine, from a graphic designer viewpoint. Ranks up there with the fedx, nike logos.

The peace symbol is classic, but generates too much religious/historic debate as to it's origin...I wish someone would come up with a new one, that said it all just as well.

And yet you're STILL unable to connect the dots.

9/11 ribbons don't replace anything. They are a shallow plea to agree to carnage.

No the peace symbol is not outdated. the struggle for peace continues.
Changing such a symbol don't help, as the new symbol don't have meaning - you may give it one but until people accept it to mean peace it just another symbol without a real meaning.
I also see the classic symbol as connecting us to the roots of the modern peace movement, the ones who paved the way for how we do things now.

    Thats my $0.02

    Peace

You're making the same mistake as Pressed Rat. You're confusing lack of subscription to fringe 911 truther theories and outright lies with support for Bush.

I and others don't stoop to the same levels as the Bush administration for the sake of supporting a truther agenda.

    Makes sense to me.

    These 60's folks are Grandparents.

Each generation makes its own heros.

Hip Hop people reject the guitar and the posturing of old folks.

Add my 2 cents to that. Everybody knows what it means and recognises it as such, and if they don't, they have been living under a rock. People who try to side track the issue by attacking the peace sign by claiming bad origins are just trying to make something which is good into something evil and take away from the peace movement. It's really a pretty trivial idea to change it, because it don't matter what color you paint it or how you dress it up, it's STILL the symbol of the peace movement.
