I have been wondering about this lately, is whats left of the younger generation hippies dieing or growing? I was only 5 at the time so I really dont remember, but in the mid 90's it seemed as if it was entirely dead, DARE advertisements were rampid and every kid and his third cousin had to complete the course.

Now it seems like there are a huge majority of kids listened the beatles, the doors, zepplin, hendrix. I know people that listen to those bands than newer shit. It seems like each year the folk festivals are getting bigger. What newer jam bands are coming up though? Phish is done, eventually the dead will stop touring (it has to happen someday), the string cheese incident seems to be the only newer jam band that has a somewhat large following, and even then, those bands arent exactly mainstream. Theyre known but most kids wont have listened to them, or listen to them on a constant basis.

It seems to me drugs are incredibly big, atleast in my area. Almost everyone smokes pot and everyone is dieing to do shrooms even though most people cant get a hold of them. Is the drug culture anywhere near the same though? In the 60's it seemed to be for enlightment and now its to get fucked up.

Put some input. <-- Be cool like him

NO no... theres lots of bands with big followings. Umphreys Mcgee, the Disco Biscuits, Keller Williams practically stole the scene, Yonder Mountain String Band, Leftover Salmon, Railroad Earth, you can't forget fuckin' Ani D, Particle, Breakfast, Ekoostik Hookah...Dark Star, The Phil Zone (I think I'd rather see these 2 bands than "the Dead" if I'm lookin' for some live Grateful Dead), Del Mccoury's still playin'... I mean man, its crazy how many good ass bands are out there playin, those are just some of the larger names that came to mind... but theres definitely lots of great music out there, just have to look harder :)

Other than music and drugs, there was politics, and the entire feeling of the era (I think) was to say "Fuck the man!" Nowadays, all that seems to be around is these annoying ass posers who do nothing but smoke pot and listen to the Grateful Dead, and then call themselves hippies.

And if you listen to old rock 'n' roll... good for you! Back then they didn't live on old music, new *good* rock bands were a pretty common site. Not today...

I don't think thats true at all. I think if you go to a festival in a right mind sense you get a lot more out of it than just drugs and music. I have never felt like I was a part of anything until I went to All Good and I met beautiful people there, I have never seen people respect each other in such a way that people at festivals do...i think that in itself shows that we're still up against certain standards set by society. Its good people, I've never felt so united with such a large number of people. Call them hippies, call them what you will...maybe its not the same thing but i think theres a different breed of people and its good shit. The music is still good, theres so much intricacy in so many songs, i mean, you just have to listen to it and find it...whatever. its a good time.

You still seem to forget the politics of it all, which were pretty much as important to the hippie movement as rock 'n' roll was, imo.

Actually, as this place gets more and more members, there's less and less people I consider to be "hippieish".

well, many festivals are active in having headcount tents, the last festival i was at was freezing on top of a mountain right before halloween and i spent the entire night around a campfire adn we discussed the elections and politics and all of that. At Jerry's almost every band had something to say about the election. I mean, there aren't people rioting in the streets, and maybe they arent starting big protests, but are you? I mean, I think anyone who believes in anything at all would join the cause and be prepared to fight for it. Going about it is harder than it seems I guess. Ani Difranco isn't old and shes rockin' the politics. SheShe was at the march for women's lives and that was an incredible experience. The times make it more difficult for such events to be possible however because of the way the world is today compared to before. I say, fed up with something and you want to do something about it? Start it up, I don't know, what is it politically that you dont' like about the united states? Theres a lot I don't think is right about our government and I bet we'd agree on a lot. So lets get something started, how are you involved, what are you doing to make the world better because I would love to give a hand and I bet a suprising number of people would like to help out too. Stir it up girlie!

Hehe, Chuck you were just referred to as a girlie... :D

I left these boards a week ago for various reasons (only returning to bump up my Society For Change threads and to browse only when I have a spare moment) but I wanted to quickly reply to this one.

I would say, based on these boards, that the modern day hippie movement is dying. I'm with Chuck (soulrebel) there. The amount of people who call themselves hippies here would be about 5-10% of the entire board population - just IMO. I think that this place has become more of a friendly meeting place. If you want to come here to meet a great bunch of people on the net, this is the place to come to, for sure.

    See ya, I'm outta here

well where im from i would have to say the hippie movement is not big or even respected come to think of it people im around think all hippies are about is drugs and burning out,i mean im considered a hippie in my own mind because of my beliefs not because of the wey i dress talk or what i smoke.anyway my point is where im from people dont take the hippie movement serious and think its just about drugs also im not even sure they know about the whole peace love freedom thing.also to me the whole hippie movement has to do with peace love and freedom and has nothing to do with what music you listen to because i know many people who listen to greatful dead and led zepplin and there constantley putting people down and very close minded.anyways all in all its your beliefs that make you who you are not your material possesions.

may everyone exceed past the misfortunes of life into lasting enlightenment

    peace love freedom

call it whatever you'd like and im not sure there really is any way to measure the growth or decay of a "movement" like this, but i do know its alive and well whatever it is. although i do see people pledging allegiance and hating and killing and dying i also see people loving and caring and changing the world. i know what i want, i want to see everyone loving and caring and trying to make everything better and weather the current trend shows me that or not, its never going to die, its always going to be making a difference and thats definitley what matters. Ive met some beautiful people and i know its only going to get better, even if it takes time. It depends on how you would define the movement but if you mean love and respect and universal caring and appreciation, its a contagious and constant thing, how i see it, its only getting bigger. how many times have you met people who said, yeh i used to really be devoted to a new kind of love and peace, but hey, not anymore! i dont think that kind of thing ever really dies in a person.

i would say 'seems' would be the important part of this statement.

Ahh, come ooon man! What the fuck kynda statement is this? Because a band isn't 'new', it doesn't take the magic away.

Grateful Dead is the worst example you could give of this.

I'd say jailmate spelled the deal out about as simple as you can. Mynds are more closed and preoccupied with superficial bullshit than ever.

I'm the only real male hippie at my school... I really hope I will inspire others...

It's almost funny in a sad kinda way. See, a lot of kids at my school wear Bob Marley tees just cause he smokes pot. I walked up to one of them, and asked me if they even knew what Bob Marley represents. Ya' know, the whole rastafari hippie thing. They had no clue. That's just sad.

As far as the hip population increasing or diminishing, I can't really tell, cause I live in a pretty redneck town.

Well I did not know this :p
I used to be active in organizing events and speaking at my school last year, and a couple months ago I went door to door all over this county, for the Nader campaign. I've gotten kind of anti-politics since the election, but I'm starting to get interested in them again.
I know, I love Ani. She's one of my favorite musicians... woooo! Another Ani fan! Rock on.
Haha, this would go on forever... and it's not really the point I was trying to make. My point is that all of the "hippies" I know in real life that are my age either don't care or support Bush... haha, doesn't make sense...
Well... whatcha got in mind? :p
    lmfao....haha, I'm a dude, dude :D

hahahahahaha! This is very true.... really :D

I'm talking about where I live. That's how it is here, its soooooooooo annoying.

Well without new bands, you can't really go to their shows, can you? And it'd be pretty sad if classic rock became the voice of youth nowadays.

    Not where I live.

Hey I'm an Ani fan too. (Visit Ani thread under Music forum) Yeah she does rock the politics and then there are other bands that don't promote the "hippie image" like the Beastie Boys who are all about love, peace (I think all of them or at least MCA practice Buddhism), and changing society for the better. They helped start the Tibetan Freedom concerts and are very active in our politics. I really don't think "hippie" is about an image, or doing drugs but I agree with those who wrote that it is alot about positive change, peace, love, freeedom, and the ongoing search for enlightenment. I think there are alot more of us around than people assume. Don't be fooled by appearances and as the great Willie Wonka said "Never ever doubt that which you do not know about."
