I think it is.You have to adapt to the 'new world'.Your mind is free and you can wear what you want but those big festivals in the 60's and 70's where are they?[IMG]
Or is it just in our country that you can't find any good man how think along the right lines.

    1. you are right about the hole men situation i have been lucky enough to find a good one out of the see.

And yes the festivals still carry on you just have to follow the right thred, we hold them ourselves over in Australia my boyfrind is a dj... it is soo good cause you can dress how you want and do what you wont, everyone is so open and loving its great but other then that it is hard for people to be hippies expecially women and the younger generation.

Well, in my opinion, there should be no competition for being a "real hippie." Simply being yourself works wonders [IMG]. Someone could attend all of the festivals in the world and still not share the values and the lifestyle (the most important parts). It is not at all about fashion, festivals, drugs, or whatever else is coined with being a "hippie." There are festivals still going on, though, but finding them depends on where you live and such. I guess my main point is that adapting to the new world is destroying the whole point of it all. You will find living in your own world is much better than worrying about the one around you [IMG].

No, I don't think it's harder to be. And look, here's a cool festival in your country: http://www.szigetfestival.com/index.php?p=1
It's a whole week! Some friends and I are even interested in roadtripping to it. :D

i think it's what you make of it. Some people have trouble accepting the skin they are in no matter what it is! You have to learn to be happy with you.

Just remember the indians have it worse! :indian_ch:

I don't think it's any harder to be a 'hippie' now than it was back in the '60s and '70s.

To me, being a hippie is all about thinking and appreciating. You can do that no matter where or when you're living, as long as you have it in ya.

I guess it's harder to find groups of 'hippies' now than it was then, but you can still do it if you look hard enough.

If you are a hippie in Algonac, Michigan...it is. I know from first-hand experience. At least everyday i get a person yelling "I'll kick your dirty hippie ass all the way back to woodstock!" at me...and then i get criticised for things i write in the school newspaper even if it's not an opinionated story at all.
I can't get a summer job just because of the way i dress, which isn't that far from normal by the way.
I can't take my shoes off in school because i get yelled at i told that I'm being "Disgusting and Unacceptable"...but what can i say...i like being me and if that's the price i have to pay...i'll damn well pay it.

I think it is. I mean, at least where I live. Where I live, and go to school, being a hippie isn't something to be proud of. It's not exactly looked upon. I get called a "dirty hippie" quite a bit (which really isn't accurate because I'm not dirty). I was raised catholic, so my ideals weren't exactly the church's ideals, my school is a rich snobby school which I can't stand, and would do anything to leave it, but am not allowed to. All they care about there is materialism. Who has more money, and who is wearing the latest tshirt from hollister.

But I'm just myself. And my friends are themselves. And we get along pretty good with the world, and are happy the way we are.

So I think it's hard to be a hippie, but, who really cares? If your a hippie, your a hippie. Just be yourself, and that's whats important.

    what i think

if you have to take shit from other people, that does not make it hard or any harder [than the 60s] to be a hippie. everyone has to take shit for some reason no matter how your categorized. also taking this shit (like not being able to get a job) shouldn't effect your personality or your spirit, so that doesn't make it any harder.

on the contrary, I think its always going to be hard being a hippie. the more technologically advanced we get, the more people's ideals change, the more fighting, and the more to fight for.

I feel pretty strongly about this.

Most of the time, I don't dress in the way your stereotypical "hippie" would dress. I'm really into politics and have spent time working for the government. I listen to jam bands, but also to a lot of hardcore, metal, industrial, etc.

But I know I'm still a hippie. Like someone else said, it isn't about the festivals or the drugs. It's about what's in your heart and mind. As trite as that sounds.

I never stopped being one...it's not something you can turn off and on. It's a state of mind, not a fashion trend.

But for heaven sake, spell it right. It's HIPPIE, not HIPPY. HIPPY means your pants don't fit right cuz you've sat on your butt doing nothing for too long....

Or maybe you're asking if that can be done today-- I'd have to say yes on that one.

A true hippy is a visionary who understands that humanity can inhabit this planet peacefully and who has set out to prove this vision by adopting a hippie lifestyle. Living a hippy lifestyle happily and successfully is the goal, to present a living embodiment of a positive future to the rest of the world.

Your life is art, and I think hippies all understood this on at least some basic level. Being a hippie is as much about walking the walk as it is talking the talk. Maybe more so.

It was never easy being a hippie at any point in time.

I didn't mean that in an elitist way, but I think a portion of people in the 60's were only in it for the free love and drugs, and then went on to join the corporate world in the 80's when the movement lost mainstream interest. Would you call those people true hippies?
