Earlier, I noticed that a lot of jewellery worn by the hippies I know is made out of wood. When I questioned them about it, they claimed that they wear it because it's a product of nature.

That's true, I suppose, but is it not unethical considering it encourages the cutting down of trees?

I read that all exotic woods are collected from the floors of the forests, no trees are ever cut.

I saw that on another hippie site. :)

It surely beats the huge energy required for mixed alloys and metals and whatever the hell else goes into most jewelery. I'd like to have a wooden algiz rune.

Eh, there's a difference between being ethical and still trying to enjoy your life. I mean most of us are on the internet using electricity probably powered by coal or oil.

You can't build wooden houses without cutting down trees. Everything consumes and is in turn consumed. But we must find a balance and surpress our greed.

I don't know about ethical thing of the process of making beads, but I feel that wood has some magical properties and I want to utilize them. Another thing is how to wear beads. Sometimes I think that it is to showy to wear beads above your clothes, so I just wear them beneath. Anyone has any idea or is it just problem of my mentality?

Trees are a renewable resource. Gold and silver and metals and stones are not.

It depends on how the trees are farmed and where they are farmed.

  14. I have the most fabulous earrings made from fallen pine cones. Still had to attach them to silver hoops and use varnish to protect them! You just have to do the best you can. I bought a load of wooden stuff in Kenya and they were all made from fallen branches and the like.
