I was reading some book, and it was taking about how veal is made. disgusting, obviously. but what is veal? baby cows. and what do baby cows come from? female cows. and where do those female cows come from? dairy farms. I can't believe I've never thought of that. same goes for beef cows. so, I guess that's being hypocritical by drinking milk but not eating cow. no milk?
I think milk veal was the original gross-out/ heart strings campaign in the 80s. I rarely notice veal outside of Italian restaurants, so I kind of forgot about it.
Ah, but last night I ran across it in Jane Goodall's Harvest of Hope. She makes a lot of cases for ethical meat (sigh) and notes a difference in milk/white veal and pink veal.
I know, but even though the animals are being treated ethically, they almost always have a terrible death. And I just don't eat meat, and I don't want to promote the killing. It just seems really hypocritical. I'm wondering who else has thought of this... because I really need some insight on this. ATM I'm trying to be as vegan as possible..
how can it get worse by being in the pitch dark [and becoming blind, which pretty much kills the veal], fed surplus milk, and not being able to move? stand there. in the dark, for 4 months?
Cows have feelings too. And in my opinion/judgement (based solely on one book), they were treated worse.
Well, the Jungle was about worker rights (Sinclair and his wife were prominent socialists), and readers got so grossed out by the descriptions that they forced the Pure Food and Drug act, which led to today's FDA. Worker conditions were not noticeably improved. I believe animals are treated about the same once all conditions are taken into account (battery cages, confined feeding, transport)
behindthesun93 - That's the choice between being vegetarian and vegan. I know how you feel though. I don't drink milk but i am guilty yogurt and the occasional cheese. I was vegan for a few weeks but my body got pretty sick, but as time goes on I've eliminated more and more dairy/ eggs from my diet. It's working much better for me than going completely vegan right away. I've been veggi for 5+ years
I could never go vegan. Give up chocolate milk just as soon as my lactose intolerance has come under control? NO. But I continue to say: FREE RANGE. Happy animals make better eggs and milk.
Soy milk is good but some things can't be replaced. As long as your careful about what your buying and where it's coming from, than good on you. iggy:
I don't see how you have a problem with killing animals but you dont have a probelm with supporting its industry and the veal industry. I just thought buying organic milk and eggs was fine
you're still stealing the calf's milk, That's terrible I've started to use soy milk, which isn't such a big deal. I hope i can find good vegan cheese. [tofutti is revolting] ice cream is just a big one its my favorite food EVER
I'm not really a good source on this, as I'm just recently going vegan, but it seems like there are plenty of healthy, humane replacements for all these foods that are harder to give up. By supporting the dairy industry, though, we are directly supporting the meat industry. As I said, I've just started making the transition, but I have faith that it is the right thing to do for me.
Veal is mentined a lot here and I always mention it if anyone asks about my reasoning behind not consuming cows milk. Disgusting stuff (the veal and the milk)
behindthesun93- I do have a problem with it, i never said i didn't but not everyone can be vegan right away. I rarely use milk products in my diet and probably have used a hell of lot less than you have in your life, considering your a 'recent' vegan. Vegetarianism came naturally to me, i just one day stopped eating meat, and that was that. I've never looked back. Maybe one day veganism will happen the same way, maybe not. I've been vegan before, and i have many vegan meals in my diet, probably close 90% of my meals are vegan. Think before you start attacking ppl with mislead accusations and don't start holding yourself higher than others because you've been almost vegan for a couple days.
ah, I see. I'm not becoming vegan, just ovo-veg. hopefully. or I'm trying to cut down as much as I can. Giving up meat is SO much easier than givng up milk... my favorite foods are made from dairy.. tortellini, butter, ice cream, milkshakes, chocolate... the list cold just go on and on and on. WOAH WOAH WOAH... hold the phone... I never said that. I didn't say any of that to you personally I never said I was higher than you. I'm just saying is that before I had no idea dairy was supporting the meat/veal industry and depriving calves from their mothers milk. Even if it is organic, which is all I would use. And then I found out it was... and now I'm just thinking, 'if you're vegetarian, why aren't you a vegan?' ..or at least ovo-veg. Your situation is different than most.
