So my license is revoked for six months starting today. I am definately not the type to let that keep me from going places. I have a bike that is kinda crappy, but it definately gets the job done. It has the front derailer removed and only a front fender, mismatched handlebar covers, a tire that is skidded to the fabric thread, no back brake. I need a new bike.. My ideal bike will have: metal pedals fenders at least seven gears 26" mountain wheels and frame rear luggage rack straight handlebars. (not the "ram-horn" or cruiser type) not cheap shit parts. dayton craigslist is not really helping much. everyone is either selling junk or wants over 200 dollars. I know how to work on them, and am willing to compromise here and there, but there's so many options that I think i need a little help with my search and decision. EBAY is impossible to browse. if anyone is willing to help me search or has any input i am totally open to it.
I would rock a giant in a heartbeat, but people think that the MSRP stands forever. these fenders https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSaTq3PSUKo"]How to choose fenders - YouTube
You could buy all the parts separately and build your own bike? I'm trying to find a bike for myself as well but all the bikes in the shops near me are either too pricey or just too boring. I'd like something funky and vintagey. With streamers of course.
I have a Diamond back and since I bought it I have not done a thing to it, and miraculously, everyday I carry heavy amp and gear back and forth..and I haven't done a single repair yet it remains 100%perfect. I decided to invest money and buy all I needed for it. No other Bike has been so tough and free of any repair...feels like a miracle.
I don't know if you know the French supermarket chain Carrefour, but my bike is from there. Bog standard, no frills, and it takes me everywhere. My only criticism is that it is a bit heavy. I sometimes have to carry it up and down 3 floors. I have had more expensive bikes but they did not do a better job.
Flea markets, yard sales, they can't give them away. I could have gotten two brand new Diamondbacks for $50.00 bucks each at a yard sell, still had nubs on the tires, but I already have two bikes.
Why did your license get suspended? You might be able to get some legal aid or something to get the suspension reduced. How far do you have to travel for work? What are your other travel needs? One of the problems here is that six months from now, it's going to be january. Not a fun time to be biking places. If you end up having to bike in bad weather, you are more likely to get sick. Or if you are a little sick, you might be ok enough to work, but not to bike to work. You might want to check out public transit in dayton http://www.i-riderta.org/ every RTA bus has a bike rack that can carry two bikes, but it's first come, first serve. If anyone who works at the same place lives near you, you might be able to share a ride. Could your wife drop you off at work, or along a bus route? some times, cities will have a mini bus that goes off main bus routes, but you have to schedule rides in advance. I don't know if dayton has this, but you could look into it. You could also advertise on craigslist or elsewhere to do a regular ride share to work. If you still want to get a bike, you could try talking down some of the craigslist people. I find that they usually ask for at least double what they'll settle for, and typically inflate prices. You could also get a more expensive bike, and then just resell it after 6 months.
My ideal bike is a Diamondback...fenders...rack.. front and back... right hight handlebars...its been worked very hard daily and for months it works like new. Paid 400 and it works as if right out of the shop.
my bike i have now is a diamondback. I actually had to take the 80cc motor off of it to ride it because that chinese piece of shit wouldn't stay mounted to the frame for the life of me.. back brakes need new cable and that's it.. back fender came undone and rolled under the tire and that's trash now. that seat is super comfy and i like my speedometer, but those are transferrable. I guess this is really a great bike. It still rides true with all the mods ive done and undone. also, I refuse to rely on other fleshbags for my transportation. work is less than a mile except on mondays and tuesdays I have to go about three miles to work. (I work at multiple locations.). As far as the weather goes, I used to ride my bike to work every day all year long until i was 23 or 24, so it's nothing i can't handle. if snow is too high or its icy out, i just walk http://i.imgur.com/5anKhuW.jpg http://i.imgur.com/jQD6D5h.jpg
