My anthropology professor showed us this documentary today, about illegal immigrants. It was basically a story about these two guys from Benin (a West African country.. one of the poorest countries in the world) and about their journey to Europe. Only.. they never make it to Europe. In hopes of getting to Europe, they turn to these human smugglers who make their money by smuggling people from all over Africa, first across the border to Algeria and Morocco, and then finally to Europe. It's a heartbreaking story. And also very appalling. Apparently, European Union has made a deal with North African governments and police officers that all these illegal immigrants that are stopped while trying to enter Europe, are to be thrown in jail in Morocco and Algeria (where most of the people are caught) where human rights are non-existant and where these people have zero chances. And this is all because the European Union wants to keep this "problem" away from Europe AND away from the Western newspapers. Why should WE have to deal with the problem, when we can just throw it in a jail in Algeria and let it rot there?! Wehey, problem solved.
I don't like it either, but at the moment that's how it is, you can try to change it, but there are plenty of people that wouldn't want change. Maybe eventually...
Then again, there could be a sizeable number of people who would want to change it, why else would they want to keep it from the public's eye?
Exactly. So even the European Union knows that it's WRONG. If it wasn't, or if they truly thought they would be doing the right thing, they'd have no reason to hide it. See that's exactly what I don't understand... Why do people think it's better to just hide problems instead of dealing with them? And this is in general, not just this particular case. I mean sure.. it's not always exactly easy to come up with a solution, but hiding the problem is not gonna make the problem disappear. It's just gonna make it even bigger and eventually.. the whole thing is just gonna blow up. It's ridicilous. And in this case.. it's inhuman. Fine, I don't expect EU to have a perfect solution for this, but at least they could be honest and admit that there's a fucking problem!!
We also help thousands of refugees in this country and across the eu as well. you say illegal imigrants, i am not saying throwing people in jail is right and i have not seen the film your talking about so won't even say i know the situation they are in... I would call them refugees not illegal imigrants ? lots abuse the system .. i am sure the two you speak of did not .. just got caught trying to make a better life for themselves ? http://www.islam-online.net/English/News/2005-01/31/article03.shtml It truly is a epic problem one way or another .. and the recent media coverage has made me sick with certain politicians attitudes and the coverage in general... but i don't blame the E.U just the money grabbing criminals that trade on the tragic circumstances of others.. not to say their are not thousands abusing the way things are on their own. If you can find any info on this too open my eyes jo..much apreciated.
Maybe they don't see it as a problem, but just worry that everyone else might? Problems are always easier to solve in the open, when everyone is aware that there is a problem, but they may well not want to find a solution, that may be good enough for them.
I can't remember the name of the document, but I'll ask my professor next week if you'd like. It was shown on BBC Four a bit before christmas.. I'm sure you'd find it interesting, especially coz it was only made last year so all the problems shown in it are very current. Anyway. I blame the EU for not being honest and for trying to hide their TRUE policies. It's sickening. How can you preach about human rights and their importance when at the same time you're actually violating them yourself? Now there's some good ol' hypocricy for you.
That's what I think too. People should be free to come and go as they please... We're all humans and we're all in this mess together. Why are there borders between pieces of land? I mean.. isn't that just ridicilous? Animals don't have borders.. why do we have? Maybe this is just me being naive, but I don't care.. Anyway, my point was that I don't understand why we have to build all these limits (like restricting ourselves into all these stupid labels like certain nationality, religion, etc..) to ourselves and then wonder why everything's wrong in the world.
I think it maybe a storyville:songs from ? (not sure) i can't seem to pin it down.. narrowing it down would be good thanks.. i could find endless condradictory stuff if i just roamed around so thanks , if you remember . Thank or curse history for that and peoples need for homelands .. prejudices , religous diffrences economical dependance on maintaing individual economies etc etc etc If we were too ask everyone to 'get on' and 'live in peace' 70% would say either 'no' or 'ok, but ....' hence imho we have all this shit in the world.
I was wondering about such things myself.. Why the need for all these restrictions, and imaginary lines? Having to get citizenship and all that, it just makes everything needlessly difficult.. Like you said, everything would be so much easier if we were free to just wander where we please, like animals do.. All these rules and restrictions.. There is just no need.. The only need is the ones we create, they're sort of self perpetuating... Civilization makes me so angry some days. If we are so advanced, then why can't we keep things simpler? Why can't our technology and such be used to make this world a better place, rather than divide it and cause troubles? I guess there really is no point in getting upset over this stuff though, it's not like there is anything I could do about it.
with all of the bad attention towards the US now, the EU looks great by comparison. but people forget that there are major problems in europe too.. like my friends moroccan husband in spain who was arrested on false charges, then forced to go to jail for 2 years while his wife had their baby...
Yeah. I know of this one Zimbabwen guy who was arrested and later sentenced to jail for five years (if I remember correctly) because he had been in a shopping mall, saw a lost child there and talked to this kid trying to help him find his mother. Well, the mother came, saw this guy talking to her kid, called the police and accused the guy of trying to kidnap the kid. And now he's in jail.
there was this policeman in barcelona that targeted moroccans and just beat the shit out of them and stole whatever they had.....got away with it for uyears because the morccans are so looked down upon there. some junkie girl came up to us fake crying, saying that a moroccan robbed her and could we give her some money....kind of how someone in america might say about a black guy.
