Ok so as of now I'm a college freshman. My parents basically forced me to go.. yes because they are good parents and all that. I'm doing well .. as far as grades. I'm really unhappy because all I want to do is just work and be on my own completely. I want to try and get a place over the summer and see what its like.. and if I can't handle it then i guess I'll go back to school for sophmore year. Is it really possible for a 19 year old with around $5,000 ? I need to get out of Jersey too. I'd love to move to california but that seems impossible..

    please I feel desperate..

Of course I don't know you or your situation, so if I speak in generalities please take that into consideration.

"I want to try and get a place over the summer and see what its like.. " there's nothing wrong with that, and frankly, it does most folks a lot of good. I don't know about the cost of living where you are or want to go, but $5000 should be plenty for a place over the summer.

You say you are, "unhappy because all I want to do is just work and be on my own completely". Please keep in mind that three years or so from now, you'll be doing that & for the rest of your life. Don't be in too much hurry, you'll be there soon enough. And it's not a question of if you can handle it, when you get out, in a place of your own, job, all that ... you'll "make it", you don't have any choice. The question will be what kind of life will you be living, quality of life type stuff.

I very much encourge you to look deep into yourself & pin point why you're so unhappy. For instance, if you're still living at home, that could be it...not college itself. In which case you could maybe move into a dorm. Nothing says you can't work, have a place of your own and still continue college. Many millions do.

If you just want to "strech your legs", put 1/2 that money in the bank, take the other 1/2, get a couple trusted friends and next summer go bum around Europe a couple months.

If you need a diversion, do some volunteer work while in college. There's plenty of stuff along those lines.

Like I said I don't know you or your situation, but a lot, a LOT, of the folks I've talked to are unhappy with what they're doing in college, the courses, their major, etc. In my experience, when parents basically forced someone to go, there is resentment & unhappy soon follows. Some folks are one way or another cornered into taking courses toward a major they don't like. Or they think they need to take _________ (what ever it may be), so they'll be able to get a good job. I've got news for you, a job doing something you're not truely interested in is never a good job. In this old hippie's humble opinion, colleges & Universities should be viewed as part of the service sector. If you're curious about something, want to know more about something, or to learn more about something you're really interested in - college provides that service. Again, look deep inside.... what do you really, truely want to do with your life? That'll tell you what you should be studying. I've known people who love art, but went to college & became C.P.A.s, etc., etc. Even if there are other factors that contribute to your unhappiness, knowing you're learning about your true interests is a good thing.

Also, you are in the transition, one of the hardest, the transition into adult life. If it gets too hard, check at your school. They often have counselors, other than academic counselors, that are worth a try. They can be more help than you may imagine.

And by all means, talk to your parents. Tell them how you feel and why and some ideas you may have to improve things. I'd be willing to bet, your parents don't want you to be unhappy.

Hope at least some of this helped.

    Peace,
