My personality is unusual.. so therefore I don't have to pretend to be odd... Though, I would never pass out candy bars to complete strangers that's just weird...
my roommate and an ex refues to follow many social norms.. its actually rather obnoxious. mostly because the ones they ignore(d) were ones of politeness to others
My entire life seems to play around innocently breaking social norms. I do it in a playful way though, and deep inside I hope that it helps people accept diversity.
I don't think acting outside of social norms is possible, if sociality is taken as a dynamic and animated constant.
I'm generally a really polite person, but I love making people I don't know feel awkward in a conversation, and pretending im serious. I also like pretending i'm a completely different person when I hook up with girls. I dont know why, but its fun.
I would be one of those people running in terror...LOL. I hate clowns. Being unique and different is one thing. That's cool, and I'm all for that. I do find it a little irritating when people are constantly trying to MAKE themselves seem unique by doing everything completely opposite of what is expected. That gets old real fast. LOL.
I have never followed social norms.. or if I have it was only subconsciously.. because I couldn't care less about them!
I think a bunch of people have correctly pointed out that there are different types of social norms. For instance, a nice social norm is that you shouldn't masturbate on the subway. I'm not crazy about people who ignore that one. Some aren't there for any particular reason, though, and I like some people who sometimes break those ones. As long as they're not all "woo, look how crazy I am!" about it.
Do you mean, Am I am rugby player out on the piss? Then NO, I am not. But I have been known to exhibit some outrageous behaviour in my days as a naive beer swilling student. I'm quite embarrassed about it all in hindsight though so I'm not going to tell you what I did. It's apparently good for you to do this. Osho, the enlightened Indian tantra guru, says that it is important for everyone to get rid of all the crazyness inside of us, and that such a release can have a positive effect on our minds. The late Scottish psychologist R.D. Laing wrote in one os his many books that he beleives the schitzophrenic not to be abnormal, but rather someone who is unable to supress their natural instincts in an abnormal society. We keep too much crazy shit bottled up, let it out man.
When people come to my door and try to sell me stuff I ask them if I can barrow $20.00 it always throws them off.
