If you could legalize marijuana, but it meant prohibition of alcohol?

In this fantasy scenario consider complete legalization of marijuana while alcohol is now illegal and regarded as a soft "gateway" drug. Impossible and silly, but forget about plausibility. Would you do it? Would you allow this switch to happen if you had the power?

I would in a heartbeat. I have a recent history with alcohol and it's done nothing for me but perhaps get me more willing to try pot. You see, I got into drinking about a year and a half ago, did it heavy for the last 10 months or so and now I feel done with binge drinking.

The big difference for me is that with pot I learn something new (usually many things) everytime I get high, while with alcohol I get the impression I'm just destroying my organs for a few hours of joy. Maybe I'm doing some damage to my lungs by smoking but at least I'm getting something in return, and at least I'm not destroying my most prized organ, my brain.

So yeah, if I had to "switch" the country's stance on alcohol and pot, I would. This would make a hell of a lot more sense too, considering the deaths, violence, and health problems related to drinking that aren't there with pot.

This is a fantastic question and I applaud you for it. That said, YES YES YES. I only drink socially and if it's the only way to get fucked up. I would much much rather get high than drunk.

Ya, I'd go for it. Besides, since when has the mere fact that a drug is illegal deterred me from doing it if I want to.

my days of heavy drinking are long over. However, the jury is still out on this question in my mind. At first, I was all for this social switch but upon reflection I'm not so sure. I do enjoya casual drink now and again. I particularly enjoy a fine glass of wine well matched with a fine meal. I could live without this pairing. however, I think about the emergence of organized crime during the prohibition era. let me have a couple more cocktails while I ponder

No, the same problems we have with Marijuana would spring up for the hooch.
I say they should both be legal, as responsible drinking is fine.

On second thought, I take it back... I'd rather buy weed from a drug dealer than alcohol from a drug dealer.

hell no! Ive never been drunk, and have had many family problems because of alcohol, but i just don't support the illegalization of any substance.

    legalize everything!

notice that they had to make alcohol illegal because prohibiting it caused more shit. this is not the case for marijuana, there arent violent confrontations over it on the most part.

someone said theyd rather buy weed from a dealer than alcohol from a dealer - this is a very good point.

Illegalizing alcohol to legalize pot, on paper, would be smart. Booze is much more harmful to yourself and others.

But the hell with that. They'll pry my booze out of my cold, dead hands.
Pot also produces some of the most obnoxious elements of humanity there are:

-The gang of a dozen 16 year olds who just got high and feel the need to drive around town acting like douchebags and sharing the experience with everyone.

-The condescending pseudo-philosopher pothead who is always dropping his vast quantities of useless and/or made-up 'knowledge' about many different stupid things on any conversation anyone tries to have about anything.

-The dumbshit who smokes half a pound a day and can't attend ANY remotely social gathering without apparently bathing in bongwater and inhaling a blimp-full of pot smoke.

Of course, booze creates drunk-drivers, who are high on the list of the world's biggest pieces of pure, unadalterated shit.

Yes. I've hoped for a long while that this may actually happen.....someday. I think that tobacco should be illegal and weed legal, also.

Notice that the majority of people who would go for this are under 21. They do not know the pleasures of life that await them once they develop the physical ability to handle alcohol. Just an observation :)
