First up!

Remember the girl from Mississippi that wanted to bring a girl to prom, i.e. she was a lesbian(in case it wasn't obvious) and the school flipped shit and just canceled the prom all together because aside from the lesbian issue, they wouldn't accept a girl wearing a tuxedo.

Well this is how it goes
1. Courts rule school is fucked up and violated the girls rights, but school says it's too late to
2. ACLU gets offered money to put on prom for school, but from a severely atheist group, but rejects it probably in a sane attempt to keep the peace.

Here’s the news, from a source I view as extremely reliable. The prom the school district promised at the country club in Fulton was a ruse. Only seven kids, Constance, and her date showed, and at the same time, everyone else held a “real” prom at a secret location out in the county.

This is all after the school district had represented to Judge Davidson that Constance was invited to a parent-sponsored prom to be held at Tupelo Furniture Market. The school represented that Constance was invited in court filings, testimony, and representations by the school district and its lawyers. In reality, Constance had not been invited, but, based on the representations by the district and its counsel, Judge Davidson denied Constance’s request for a preliminary injunction that she could go to the prom.

The school reneged, or possibly didn’t ever intend to follow through on its representations to the court. The parents didn’t want Constance at the prom and didn’t want to be sued (as they told the Clarion Ledger), and so on Tuesday announced the cancellation of the prom.

But what they’d done was secretly relocated it.

Shortly thereafter, the school’s attorney announced (on Wednesday) that “the prom” was to be held at the Fulton Country Club on Friday. But yet only seven kids showed up.

Meanwhile, there’s a rumor that school officials were directly involved in setting up the “fake” prom.

Sooooooo, if that wasn't enough, this school district is really trying to see itself sued out of existence, at the same time the prom fiasco started happening at the same exact school.....

And, once more, an example of some of the issues that surround all of this, and a reason why it is that the T is part of the LGBT.
What's that you say? Not again? Now I'm "stealing" the prom fiasco?
Well, let's look a bit closely, shall we?

Constance asked, initially, in December if she could take her date.
Then she asked again. She was told she couldn't take her date. She was also told she could not wear a Tuxedo, which she had added to the request.

Keep this in mind, please. She was told, before the thing became national news and a court case, that she couldn't take her date but that they could both go there and be there together.

Indeed, that date part wasn't the court issue. The issue was that she wanted to wear a tuxedo to the Promenade Dance.
To put it in terms that are clear: she wanted to cross dress in attending the Prom.

In the interviews with Constance that were published, she made the point that she was told she could take her date, but when she brought up the issue of wearing a tuxedo, the Principal told her that if he let her do that, he'd have to let some boy do it. And he simply was not going to allow that.
Period.

Then we find out about a quieter story. Another story. The same school. The same Principal. The same time as Constance asking to go to the Prom.
One kid. One trans kid. Sent home the first day he arrives at school. Sent home the next day he arrives at school and given a suspension.
Essentially driven out of the school, his entire family was more or less forced to relocate.

Because this kid, who still uses male pronouns from the reports we have, tried to go to school.
No major coverage in the news. Not even a peep about it. No one really talks about it. No invitations to Ellen, no lawsuits, no ACLU.
No outrage.

A school that Constance attended. A school that shut down a prom rather than let a kid attend cross-dressed.
The judgment against the school said that it had indeed violated her right of expression, just as they had violated the rights of that one trans kid. She won the case.
The judge said she had the right to attend the Prom crossdressed since it was a statement of free expression.

Getting that point now?

They throw one kid out of the school for wearing clothing opposite their assigned sex and gender, and move a prom because another kid wants to attend it in the clothing assigned to the opposite gender with a stated reason of not wanting to let a person assigned male sex do the same.
What if, instead of suing, Constance had simply decided to wear a dress?
She and her date could have gone to the Prom. It wouldn't have been canceled. There would have been no lawsuit, no national press.

One gay girl crossing a gender norm. Not a sex norm -- she's not wanting to be a boy. She's a girl, and, thus far, appears to like it.
Do not tell me that this is about being gay.

It is not.

And saying that is an insult to the young person who now lives in Florida, where his family could find work after he was tossed out of school.
Who does not have a $30,000 scholarship and an internship in New York City, who has not been invited on Ellen or been featured in national news stories.

But who's mere presence ultimately started this whole cycle of events.
I don't begrudge Constance her scholarship. I don't fault anyone for giving her the coverage (although there are Trans folk who do and do so rightfully) or the opportunity. I am thrilled to death that such things happened for her.

I also think the bullshit thing the school did -- and the school is complicit in this, no question in my mind, as are the parents of every last one of the children who attended the "birthday party" they lied about the real Prom being, and every single one of the kids who attended that Prom and left the social outcasts to a community joke -- is one of the most unimaginably cruel things anyone has ever done without actually causing physical harm.
All because a girl wanted to wear a tuxedo to a dance, and because some people are so damned afraid of the Trans that they'll even attack a lesbian.

Go on. Say it.
Say the T isn't a part of the whole.
Go on -- advocate for the split, the difference, the breaking up.
The entire thing around this school is because of Trans stuff. So please, say it.
Because I want you to be aware of the hypocrisy there.
And the cruelty that you are supporting to your own when you do that.

I posted that article and not the original one specifically because it's a scathing scolding of the fact the LGBT community generally has a really fuckin hard time standing up for the T. They throw a shit storm over the fact a girl is not allowed to wear a tuxedo to prom, yet where were they, and Ellen, and ect when someone who feels like a girl and is trying to live their life as one so they don't hate themselves gets told to fuck off, you don't deserve and education. Does this girl look like a distraction to the learning environment to you?

Now the thing is, because of Alabama's asinine rules regarding making up school work when suspended, and this approaching the end of the school year in the good deal of the south, taking the suspension would've probably resulted in a severe grade drop, so in the end the paddlin' was the better choice, which leaves the question.

Yes, America still hands out corporal punishment to its kids. The school fuckin sounds more like a bad cheaply made porno then a school. Now why this is a really big deal outside of just Texas(aside from the fact Texas has the 2nd largest population in the country), Texas is the nation's largest textbook buyer and often sells them second hand eventually to poorer districts in other states.

After three days of turbulent meetings, the Texas Board of Education on Friday approved a social studies curriculum that will put a conservative stamp on history and economics textbooks, stressing the superiority of American capitalism, questioning the Founding Fathers’ commitment to a purely secular government and presenting Republican political philosophies in a more positive light.

The vote was 10 to 5 along party lines, with all the Republicans on the board voting for it.

The board, whose members are elected, has influence beyond Texas because the state is one of the largest buyers of textbooks. In the digital age, however, that influence has diminished as technological advances have made it possible for publishers to tailor books to individual states.

In recent years, board members have been locked in an ideological battle between a bloc of conservatives who question Darwin’s theory of evolution and believe the Founding Fathers were guided by Christian principles, and a handful of Democrats and moderate Republicans who have fought to preserve the teaching of Darwinism and the separation of church and state.

Since January, Republicans on the board have passed more than 100 amendments to the 120-page curriculum standards affecting history, sociology and economics courses from elementary to high school. The standards were proposed by a panel of teachers.

“We are adding balance,” said Dr. Don McLeroy, the leader of the conservative faction on the board, after the vote. “History has already been skewed. Academia is skewed too far to the left.”

Battles over what to put in science and history books have taken place for years in the 20 states where state boards must adopt textbooks, most notably in California and Texas. But rarely in recent history has a group of conservative board members left such a mark on a social studies curriculum.

Efforts by Hispanic board members to include more Latino figures as role models for the state’s large Hispanic population were consistently defeated, prompting one member, Mary Helen Berlanga, to storm out of a meeting late Thursday night, saying, “They can just pretend this is a white America and Hispanics don’t exist.”

“They are going overboard, they are not experts, they are not historians,” she said. “They are rewriting history, not only of Texas but of the United States and the world.”

The curriculum standards will now be published in a state register, opening them up for 30 days of public comment. A final vote will be taken in May, but given the Republican dominance of the board, it is unlikely that many changes will be made.

The standards, reviewed every decade, serve as a template for textbook publishers, who must come before the board next year with drafts of their books. The board’s makeup will have changed by then because Dr. McLeroy lost in a primary this month to a more moderate Republican, and two others — one Democrat and one conservative Republican — announced they were not seeking re-election.

There are seven members of the conservative bloc on the board, but they are often joined by one of the other three Republicans on crucial votes. There were no historians, sociologists or economists consulted at the meetings, though some members of the conservative bloc held themselves out as experts on certain topics.

The conservative members maintain that they are trying to correct what they see as a liberal bias among the teachers who proposed the curriculum. To that end, they made dozens of minor changes aimed at calling into question, among other things, concepts like the separation of church and state and the secular nature of the American Revolution.

“I reject the notion by the left of a constitutional separation of church and state,” said David Bradley, a conservative from Beaumont who works in real estate. “I have $1,000 for the charity of your choice if you can find it in the Constitution.”

They also included a plank to ensure that students learn about “the conservative resurgence of the 1980s and 1990s, including Phyllis Schlafly, the Contract With America, the Heritage Foundation, the Moral Majority and the National Rifle Association.”

Dr. McLeroy, a dentist by training, pushed through a change to the teaching of the civil rights movement to ensure that students study the violent philosophy of the Black Panthers in addition to the nonviolent approach of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He also made sure that textbooks would mention the votes in Congress on civil rights legislation, which Republicans supported.

“Republicans need a little credit for that,” he said. “I think it’s going to surprise some students.”

Mr. Bradley won approval for an amendment saying students should study “the unintended consequences” of the Great Society legislation, affirmative action and Title IX legislation. He also won approval for an amendment stressing that Germans and Italians as well as Japanese were interned in the United States during World War II, to counter the idea that the internment of Japanese was motivated by racism.

Other changes seem aimed at tamping down criticism of the right. Conservatives passed one amendment, for instance, requiring that the history of McCarthyism include “how the later release of the Venona papers confirmed suspicions of communist infiltration in U.S. government.” The Venona papers were transcripts of some 3,000 communications between the Soviet Union and its agents in the United States.

Mavis B. Knight, a Democrat from Dallas, introduced an amendment requiring that students study the reasons “the founding fathers protected religious freedom in America by barring the government from promoting or disfavoring any particular religion above all others.”

It was defeated on a party-line vote.

After the vote, Ms. Knight said, “The social conservatives have perverted accurate history to fulfill their own agenda.”

In economics, the revisions add Milton Friedman and Friedrich von Hayek, two champions of free-market economic theory, among the usual list of economists to be studied, like Adam Smith, Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes. They also replaced the word “capitalism” throughout their texts with the “free-enterprise system.”

“Let’s face it, capitalism does have a negative connotation,” said one conservative member, Terri Leo. “You know, ‘capitalist pig!’ ”

In the field of sociology, another conservative member, Barbara Cargill, won passage of an amendment requiring the teaching of “the importance of personal responsibility for life choices” in a section on teenage suicide, dating violence, sexuality, drug use and eating disorders.

“The topic of sociology tends to blame society for everything,” Ms. Cargill said.

Even the course on world history did not escape the board’s scalpel.

Cynthia Dunbar, a lawyer from Richmond who is a strict constitutionalist and thinks the nation was founded on Christian beliefs, managed to cut Thomas Jefferson from a list of figures whose writings inspired revolutions in the late 18th century and 19th century, replacing him with St. Thomas Aquinas, John Calvin and William Blackstone. (Jefferson is not well liked among conservatives on the board because he coined the term “separation between church and state.”)

“The Enlightenment was not the only philosophy on which these revolutions were based,” Ms. Dunbar said.

This man is a dentist, not a historian. He thinks children need to be taught about how violent blacks are, but then goes on to say that republicans deserve credit for helping civil rights. Lawmakers in Oklahoma were so determined not to cooperate with federal officials investigating hate crimes targeting gays and lesbians that they voted for a bill requiring that police files and other documents be kept from federal investigators.

But the Oklahoma State Senate referenced the wrong section of the penal code; lawmakers ended up voting to strip away hate crimes protections relevant to race and religion, not sexual orientation or sexual identity, according to a March 29 press release from the non-partisan Center for American Progress.

The lawmakers’ action have their origins in President Obama’s signing last October of a bill that added GLBT-specific protections to a 1969 hate crimes protection law. Though the law only provides for federal investigation and prosecution of violence crime, anti-gay Christians insisted that the bill could be used to prosecute preachers and others who condemned gays out of a religious belief that homosexuality is "wrong" or "sinful."

Moreover, the bill’s sponsor, State Sen. Steve Russell, offered a further justification in saying that he wanted to avoid a situation in which federal officials took a case out of the jurisdiction of local law enforcement.

The Republican-dominated Oklahoma State Senate took action based on that claim, voting on Mar. 10 to approve a state law that prohibits "local and state law enforcement agencies from sharing information about hate crimes with federal authorities if the state of Oklahoma did not recognize the crime as a hate crime by its own statutes." Since Oklahoma state law does not extend hate crimes protections to GLBTs, the seeming intention was to strip gays in Oklahoma of federal protections.

"But in trying to strip LGBT Oklahomans of their rights, the Oklahoma State Senate inadvertently cited the wrong section of the U.S. code and allowed state law enforcement officials to keep crimes motivated by race or religion out of the hands of federal authorities," the press release said. "The bill stripped protections under Title 18 U.S. Code Section 245, but protections for sexual orientation and gender identity are actually under Section 249." Section 850 of Title 21 of the Oklahoma Statutes.

"The bill in its current form doesn’t take away rights from gays and lesbians," said Oklahoma State Senate Minority Leader Andrew Rice. "It takes away rights for religion and race." Added Rice, "Gay and lesbian citizens should be upset because someone tried to take their rights away, but minority groups should be concerned that their rights have already been voted to be taken away by the Senate. People who consider themselves Jewish, black, even Christians should be outraged."

It is expected that Oklahoma state senators will amend the bill to restore protections regarding race and religion, and take away protections for gays, before the bill goes on to the Oklahoma house.

So in summary:
1. The entire state of Texas is trying to rewrite education that will have a huge impact across the country.
2. Mississippi towns break the law repeatedly to make sure a girl can't wear a tuxedo to prom and a trans kid can't go to school period.
3. Alabama still hands out corporal punishment in public schools, at least they did it in a hilariously ironic way.

Well, I grew up in Georgia for 20 years and never had any experience with any of these things.
Not that I'm saying these aren't problems, but regional prejudice and blanket statements don't really do much to alleviate them.

No, they don't, but at the same time these are allowed to continue all over the south because mainly of how rural it is, it can literally tell the entire world to fuck off on opinion since it's so insulated. Getting the country as a whole to see things like this further puts pressure on the south to not act like its still 1945.

Actually Ellen is one of the best known LGBT activists there is, and it's just super ironic given the fact this happened at the same exact time at the same exact place. It's part of a long running complaint that the LGB part of the acronym constantly fails to do anything to support the T unless it somehow works out in favor or they get forced into it by trans activists.

And the girl wasn't breaking the dress code, if she went in men's clothes dressed in shorts and a tanktop then yea, she'd be breaking the same rules boys have to follow, but she wasn't, a tuxedo falls into the dress code regulations.

But plus, a court ruled the school was in the wrong, and in response the school further knowingly broke the law with the help of conspiring adults to throw a fake prom for her while all the other kids went to the real prom.

At least this school didn't paddle this girl's ass for breaking the dress code.

Also for the record, I don't hate the south as a whole, give me credit guys, I've met many great people from the south. It's just these things all happening together combined with the rise of the tea baggers with an election coming up, well, I think it's important to motivate people with shock.

In 1969 I moved from Georgia to Cleveland, Ohio. After living in a segregated society all of my life I was expecting to see a happily integrated city with people of all colors dining and socializing with one another. Ya know, it was them Yankees who came down south and told us that we needed to integrate.

Well, to my shock and dismay, the entire city was more segregated than the deep south ever was. Every ethnic group on the globe had it's own neighborhood. I lived there for 5 years and in that time I traveled all over the Cleveland area, which, even then was huge. And, when I got outside of the inner city, I found that life was more integrated and the facade of the old neighborhoods of the inner city were holdovers of a time long past.

My point is, you can't judge an entire city, much less an entire region based on the appearance or even the actions of a few people or even a few isolated areas. I see the gang problems of the big northern and western cities on the news, would that indicate that everyone in these regions are brutal gangsters? Is everybody in Iowa a farmer?

I'm not going to defend the actions of the people in these stories, but these are not the views of everyone in the South, but rather, the actions of people who are extremely conservative bigots who can be found all over this country. The divisiveness of today's politics and the rise of the TeaBagers has energized a resurgence of hatred and bigotry everywhere.

This is not a Southern thing, it's a conservative mentality.
