    sunlight glinting off an ocean of parked cars
    forcing the horizon to fold
    i was hoping we'd find our way on our own
    undeterred by the lure of gold

    for an open grave waits for me somewhere
    between the years, beyond this masquerade
    costumed in breath and flesh, sinew and bone
    and all of the promises that we made

    isn't it just like the lot of us
    to speak completely free from intention
    all the while our eyes on the skies
    that refuse to offer intervention

    your hands were black
    how could i turn my back?
    under my breath
    i sing Magnificat

    until that open grave at last is filled
    this is the world in which we are living
    horizons unfold only where welcome
    all is healed in the light of forgiving
