I don't know why but ever since I was little its mad me mad... You aren't African American unless you were born in Africa and moved to America or something. I say your a black American, thats all. Some people say its offensive but I don't see how.
Black American is offensive. I wouldn't be offended if you called me a European Australian. There are more important causes to take up.
O.K. then black, African American should only be used if your African. Lets just use Samuel L. Jackson as an example. He is black, and American. He is NOT African, but he is still called an African American.
Hes African American. His ancestry can be sourced back to Africa. You are a European American, get over it.
I agree with the OP. I am not AngloAmerican or European American, I'm Canadian. Black or negro does not equal African in all cases. I may not be as white as paper, but I am white. I don't know anybody black as ink, yet, they are "black" (I usually say somebody has dark or darker skin tone if describing someone, or just black). I see nothing wrong with it. Don't people still use olive to describe skin tone? African-American seems to be too assumptive sometimes. I believe I read something about how native Philipinos or something are black, would you refer to them as African American? The way I see it, is that if you're talking nationality, and you do not know what specific country someone is from, yet you are aware they are from Africa, say African or African American if you want. When describing skin tone, just use black, or say they're darker skinned or something. Why need to be so politically correct? It's not THAT offensive, is it? Like, if somebody is from a middle eastern country, how would you describe them? Brown? Arab? I would say "from the middle east" or "middle eastern".... Yes, I am somewhat contradicting myself... In some cases, I refer based on "colour" and in others, I use geographic origin... I guess...the most important thing is to not take it sooo seriously, really. Does it matter? Sure, if someone is intending to offend. If someone is simply trying to describe a person and they have a particular way of doing it, is there a reason to get hung up on it? Some black people refer to other black people as niggers, I've referred to other whites as crackers, or honkeys...I've even had discussions with a Chinese friend in which I said she was yellow. It's not always about what it is you say, but the intent and meaning behind it, and you have to learn to watch your words sometimes and ensure you're clear that it's not serious or discriminatory, and if people get offended, well, there's one bad time for ya and you can learn from that for the next time.... Wow...I guess I defeated my original point...I rambled too much....
I think that we should forget about all these long winded politically correct terms and simply settle with the following: Gook ****** Honky Spic Wog Towel Head Paki
why the fuck are chinks the people who built the most amazing wall in the world? fuckin' seriously that's wack.
I don't give a shit about a giant wall. The Australian Abos created a projectile that comes back to you after you throw it...if that's not technical genius then I don't know what is.
Its really easy to have it come back in your general direction but to actually come right back to you so you can catch it is hard. I have done it once or twice. It takes a real knack, a real outback spirit. Same with playing the didgeridoo. Same with being able to chugg a 2L bottle of cheap wine on a busy city street before the coppers come.
