I'm feeling so down right now. My 5 year old son was due to start kindergarten this fall and I tried to get him into a "top-notch" public school that was offering open enrollment. Well, I just received notice today that he was denied. I had been looking into homeschooling him prior to this as the school system in our neck of the woods is little to be desired, but now I only have two options, at least until we move the heck out of here. Enroll him into the public school system where we currently reside for this fall or homeschool. I don't know what to do. All I know is that I want the best for my kids, I want them to be happy, well-adjusted, and successful. I love them so much. I hold their future in my hands and I don't want to do the wrong thing. *cries* I just don't know what to do. I'm so confused. Just feeling really sad.
it sucks that you dont have more options but i wish the best for you and your family. just have to hang in there and play the cards youre dealt with
Non biased studies show that homeschoolers are less rounded in academics than publicly educated individuals. The majority of the time, anyway.
Wow, really? I've heard the opposite. *shrugs* Supposedly homeschooled children rank higher according to some articles I've read, one in a parenting magazine I looked through recently. But, you never know I guess. There's pros and cons to everything. I just want to do the right thing, whatever that may be. I've got a lot of soul searching to do. Thanks for your comments though.
Non biased studies will show otherwise. Parenting magazines would not be the most reliable, non biased source for such studies.
I've read some books about the subject as well, but then again, they were anti-public school books, so you know they won't glorify sending your children to school. Did you go to public school?
I did all three. Public, private, and tutor home schooled. My testing was virtually identical for public and private but significantly lower due to the home schooling.
Wow. Which did you prefer of the three? Did you feel left out when you were tutored at home? Were you lonely?
Kids need the interaction. A homeschooled kid simply can not experience everything that a publicly educated kid can. No matter how good of an instructor the parent is.
HippyChickMommy, kindergarten programs aren't necessarily something you should worry about him in. Most programs are equal, no matter where they are. It's the higher level grades that become more fragmented and less equal. So don't worry to send him to kindergarten where you are. JUst start working towards getting him to a better school system. You still have time. Don't stress.
kids can learn interaction in other areas than public school... i went thru public school, and wheN i have kids, they are going to be home schooled... and i shall teach them well... you should teach your kids to value their lives regardless of schooling... public schools exist for conformity.
