Forgive me but I have held my tongue for a good while on this topic and it has to come out.

All of these damn hippies on here make me sick. Not the normal relaxed ones, but the lets change the world and live in holes while copulating with trees.

The world is a bad bad place where the only thing that matters is the power you wield in any given situation. It is in no way fair or balanced and never will be. You either eat or get eaten, so get used to it.

I'm not saying there is no good in the world, but I am saying all these change the world threads have to stop. Many of these self proclaimed hippies are nothing but drug-users. The only person that I can think of off the top of my head that's a hippy I can respect is wonka. This is because he realizes what he wants as a lifestyle and has throughly thought shit through. He's not one of the air headed idealist idiots that plague this forum. He intends to live a more relaxed hippyish life style, but he doesn't just say he intends to or would like to or how great everything would be if everyone was like him. He just does his thing and does it well.

I hope I didn't offend you wonka it's just you are what I'd consider to be a good hippy, you don't BS you do and that's commendable.

The truth is if we want to change the world, start with yourself. Do what you need to do to live the lifestyle you envision.

Personally I see myself working for a large company for a couple years. Then moving to an area where I can get a couple acres and a nice house. There I'd hope to become a teacher (for the benefits and to try to instill a bit of critical thinking) and start a business on the side to finance all the luxuries I'd want (a dog, some guns, my own grow room, and some electronics).

To do this I'm going for my MS/MBA with a focus on finance and accounting. I'm also considering law school.

My main point is you get out what you put in for the most part. Stop fantasizing and do something. If everyone on these boards was as passionate about legalization as they claim I'm sure you could organize a march on the capital if you talk to norml and some other groups. The thing is it is almost certainly doome to failure and do you know why? It's because most people over 25 and under 60 are more concerned with their job, bills, and children than legalizing something that they can get at the drop of a hat anyway.

I agree, many people are all talk, but they have every right to speak their mind on how they would like to live their life, just as you have the right to bitch about how not everyone wants to go to law school, get a house in suburbia, and raise a family of more drones that will fit perfectly into their roles in this drab, dying system.

Knowing people means nothing in this instance, when you post on an online forum the only thing one can judge a person by is the content of their writing; and a good majority of the time you can tell a fair bit about a person from their writing.

 

Also I by no means think everyone should do what I do.

What I'm saying is that everyone should aspire to better themselves, set goal, and take the necessary steps to achieve it.

I am probably one of the most anti-establishment people I know. the difference is that I understand that you can't just completely eschew the system you have to change it from within. I'm 18 and I can guarantee you I've seen far more than you. The entire peace love and happiness in perpetuated by a few very dedicated and spiritual people, and a bunch of naive children. My college while not top 5 academically is top 5 for the jobs which are offered to it's students right out of school.

How can you complain about people wanting change when you yourself are doing nothing (or so it seems).

Speaking for myself, yes I post on internet forums and talk about wanting change but I go beyond talking and go out and protest, not only join but CREATE pro-choice, pro-rights groups at school and generally put in a majority of my time to helping others. I'm majoring in Social Work minoring in Psychology, going into advocacy and social justice and social change.

You have no right to say anything to ANYONE when you are not making any effort to be the change you want to see. You say "stop fantasizing and do something!" When enlighten me, what have YOU been doing other then complaining about complaining??

 

Swazo: it is VERY difficult to make a living off of open source, and outsourcing affects many system admins and that is the career I was looking into.

Cry about the US being brutal all you'd like, if it wasn't for brutality nothing would ever be accomplished in a timely matter. To be on top, you have to do things that harm others. Economics 101 teaches that scarcity is the basis of all economics. Most of the time there isn't enough of something to go around, and if you need that commodity you do what you need to do.

Why are wars being waged all over the world? Human greed is insatiable, more so when it's not want, but need. If it was me and you in an airtight and locked room with one air tank, you better pray your bigger than me because I need air as it will become scarce.

As far as I can tell, I have given you examples where opensource has proved to be beneficial for people - whereas you say no, and don't provide ANY examples. As a business student I am shocked at the lack of argument you've built.
PS, people dont get into open source to make loads of cash, they do it because they love the idea of free open software. There may not be millionaires, but they make enough to sustain a living.

You hear of the SuSE corporation? Redhat? Other big name distros? Do you think they pay their employes with peanuts? Go do some reading.

 

Stella_Drives - the thing is you are the ones who see a need for change for with certain things. Me I'm content with 90% of government policy. In fact I dislike the parts that are generally considered the good parts. I hate welfare, affirmative action, and basically any entitlement program you can think of.

I am if anything capitalist. I believe that you should be judged on your worth, which varies in any situation. I'm the guy you'd want with you if u were trapped under a heavy rock, there I'm useful. If you needed someone who can run 10 miles and back, I'm useless.

There are several things which I want to see changed, but I realize I am in no position to be an affective leader at this point. Mainly I would like to stop the war on drugs, stop the abuse of pitbulls, stop the excessive regulation of guns, and reform the juvenile justice system. I don't care about the weed b/c I can get as much as I can afford in 20 minutes. I intend to adopt a pitbull from the pound as soon as I get my own house. I intend to own as many guns as feasible to at least exempt myself from disarmament. If I do become a lawyer or fairly successful businessman I intend to make it one of my life's goals to fix the juvenile justice system.

 

What's wrong with changing "certain things"? You sound like your just a fresh faced kid with a buncha pipe dreams. Talk talk talk talk talk.

I understand what you're saying swazo and honestly I'm a bit offended by you attacking me over things that I obviously already know. I have used linux for 4.5ish years, I understand alot. What I also understand is that again I want a job in America. Suse is based in Germany. The decision to go for business was priamrily because I want to own my own business which may very well be linux-orientated. I know multiple older gentlemen in the IT and Comp. Sci. field who told me to go for business.

Is that a sufficient enough argument for you?
