hey, I know that the best light for ur plants is HID lights for vegg growth and hps lights for flowering growth, the problem is that I have a 400 watt HPS. IS this going to be good for the vegg growth of my plants. I bought the hps before I relized that HPS is best for flowering. what should I do????
    thanks Flp420

Your 400 hps will be just fine for veg.Metel halide is the correct spectrum for veg and produces tighter internodal distances but the hps will be fine, you will get a little more strectch outta the plants is all.

For the best of both worlds, upgrade to a 430-watt full-spectrum HPS bulb.

hey was up Here's a pic of the HPS lighing system I got, The thing I am worried about is the reflector, I read in some books that Mirror finish reflectors are just O.K for the plants and are really not that good for them, because it gives the plants "Hot Spots" I was thinkin of runnin over the reflector with some steal whool and then spraying it with some white spray paint. Is this A good Idea or should I just leave it as it is. Also I was wondering, since HPS gives of more light from the red and orange spectrum, Could I put up a 2 foot
floro fixture and use two floro lights that give of light from the blue spectrum to even things out or would this bring harm to the plants.

Adding ANY light source is good, if you can handle the heat increase. But remember the inverse square law.

    For your reflector:

cover with mylar if you can, if not, spray paint it flat (not glossy) white.

    What about this system
    Hydrofarm 200 Watt
    Daylight 6400K Compact Fluorescent
    Plant Grow Light System
Includes Compact Fluorescent Reflector, Hangers, and Socket Assembly; 200 Watt Daylight 6400K Compact Fluorescent Bulb; Tempered Lens

    Here's the web site.

    http://homeharvest.com/hydrofarmcompactfluorescents.htm

This would be for a 3'x3'x6' closet space with four plants?
Can I just use 250W MH and not HPS or vice versa. I don't have money for both.

Using the standard rule of thumb, you need 6000 lumens per sq/ft.
For your space, that's a tad over 400-watt HPS.
You can't compare watts between a HPS (emits 125 lumens per watt) and a flo (75 lumens per watt).
