i'd like to start sewing my own clothes, but im not sure where to begin. i have a singer sewing machine, but not a serger. my mom is a good sewer, but she doesnt have time to show me how to sew right now... grrrr.. but if i end up having any problems, i CAN ask her, but i'd prefer not to. so, guys, i figured id get some advice from you crazy sewin' mamas! where shall i start?
I am in the same boat as you. I ended up gettin the Threads 4 Heads book and starting from there. Trial and error works well. I tote that book around with me everywhere and keep a few blank pieces of paper in it, when I get a sudden bout of inspiration - I just sketch my idea before i lose it. I also started a little forum so I can learn a bit more along with a few online friends who have some sewin questions as well. It's over at http://www.trippythreads.com/forums/index.php Just tryin to get a bunch of newbies together to throw around some questions and advice. Hope this link doesn't bother anyone. Whatever you do, don't give up. Not havin anyone around with your interests totally sucks (I know) but the satisfaction you feel is so worth it. Look at all of these lovely ladies and their creations! It's mind blowing. Hope this helps, Love, Chris
I think getting some kind of book is a good idea. I have an old Singer sewing book from the 60s. It tells you how to make darts, insert zippers, make hems, etc . . . Or try a few simple patterns to get the basics down. New Look patterns are really cheap and easy to follow. Or look for old patterns at thrift shops and yard sales. BTW, unless you are making stuff to sell, you don't really need a serger. For everyday sewing, the regular stitches on your machine will work just fine.
try your hand at patchwork! just try sewin stuff together and seeing what coming up. patchwork can try your patience, but its something you gotta learn when you sew. patience is a virtue!!!!! just light some nag, put on some good tunes and trial and error it. good luck sista!
what do you guys think of threads 4 heads? ive heard good and bad things about it... would it be good for a beginner like me??
