When you ask people who their day is, do you really mean it, or do you do it because you feel obligated?
It depends. If they ask in the "polite business context", I give them a "polite business answer". If I ask, and I get a one word answer in a social /friends context which sort of says "I can't be bothered answering", I might think "what an ignorant prick"...
I ask my parents sometimes. It's funny because I always get a one word answer! haha.. It does amuse me. Usually I just say 'it was fine'. If its to my parents then I just list what I did.
I usually tell them they'd rather not know I woke up coughing unproductively, and now I am coughing up phlegm balls. aches and pains are lesser, I think my fever is gone, and my sinuses feel clear, but my hearing is still kinda messed up. going to have some tussive vomiting later, I almost have three times (you know how you just barely taste the vomit with the back of your tongue, but don't actually vomit, yeah, that) so, on balance, not a HORRIBLE day, but, I've been better also, netflix has the best fucking customer service ever and my bank's, which used to be amazing (they used to be a SUPER small regional bank, with thirty branches, now they are owned by the third largest bank in the world) is now utter shit.
I think the opposite.People *want* to be asked, IMO. However I know someone who was really ill. I'd hate to ask her how her health was. Because I'd think "she prob doesn't wanna hear the question". But sometimes I'd think "I don't wanna offend her by not asking..."
boogabaah, my day is going swimmingly. i've been awake for a mere hour, and already i've managed to get dressed, brush my teeth, and have a poop! yeah. it annoys me to no end when i'm working and someone walks in and i say "hi, how are you?" or something to that end and they just give me the blank stare, or worse, the "i hope you fucking die, whitey" stare. i'm generally pretty rude to those people.
its a mixture of both. for people i don't know much at all and don't ever plan on knowing, i could care less about how well their day is going, much less even bother caring if anything happened to them for others, i do care
I mean it when I ask friends and family....and a few strangers. I sometimes ask after some stranger asks me just to be polite.
