alright so.. after some intense research i'm still kinda iffy about all this so i want final approval before i do this... i'm convinced that wax is no good. i keep thinking a little might be okay, but whatever! all i'm gonna do is buy some bronner's shampoo, wash my hair, and just backcomb it. no rubber bands no wax no dreadhead HQ lock pepper or locking accelerator nothing but a comb and shampoo. is this fine? will my dreads go loose and insane w/o the rubber bands or w/o the wax...? oh and.... what kind of combs should i use to backcombing? just combs with close, small teeth? and i noticed that many people have frizzy dreads... is there any way to get consistent dreads? or does that just depend on how i maintain my loose hairs? sorry for all that rambling... please help a dreadlock noobie...
Just shampoo and comb is perfect =) I only used bands to section the hair, and then took em out as I backcombed each section til they were all gone. Then you just gotta make sure they don't grow together. Exactly how I did mine. Flea comb! Unused of course.. ha. Super close and strong teeth on 'em Yeah, your dreads will be frizzy in the beginning. pure aloe vera can calm them down. And yeah, in the long run it does depend on how you maintain them. Palmrolling helps to snag em and keep them round. Felting needles are fantastic to get rid of loose hairs.
man thanks so much... been dwelling on this for a very long time now... how difficult would you say it is to do on my own? kinda hard to find someone who'd be willing to touch my hair for 8 hours -.-;;
It doesn't take 8 hours really.. it varies. Just make a day out of it with a friend, movies, food.. It can be more fun than you think haha You can actually do the front yourself, just sit infront of a mirror. The back is way harder - and that would be the part where it'd be helpful to have a friend help you.. But if you do as much as you physically can, then a friend should be willing to spend an hour or two doing the rest that ya' can't reach But it is possible to do it all yourself.. your arms would die though haha
Good luck with your dreads I have just this weekend done exactly what you have described. No Wax, no bands, did the front and some of the sides and my wife did the rest. Watched pirates of the Caribbean and preditor v alien both films have dreads of sorts and made a bit of a day of it. Scalp feeling a little tender today but not too bad Gonna wear a hat for a few days to calm down the side show bob look but I am happy with the results Go for it, find (bribe) a friend. Feed them and give them some drinks and listen to music and watch movies mamos
yup yup...i told my best friend i would pay for one of her tattoos if she did them. (i have a hell of a lot of hair)...it took a while...but with movies, food, etc its all fun. i have my rubber bands in...because i have a lot dreads, and a lot of hair, it is hard for me to make sure they are all separate..and not growing together. I plan on taking them out sometime very soon though...mine are about 4.5 months old...so probably for their 6 month birthday i'll do it . and make sure to enjoy your experience...it is so much fun
so i'm getting this done this weekend but i just realized a possible problem... a friend of mine told me i didn't have enough hair for dreadlocks... is this a real problem? i have almost straight, asian hair that comes down nearly to my shoulders.... kinda worried if i did have "too little hair" how should i fix such a problem? section more hair i guess? please help =X
uhhh.. completely newbie question but... i got me some dr. bronner's soap... peppermint (they ran out of tea tree D=) so i remember that i needed to dilute it but... when i actually got to it i had no idea what to do! ~_~ so i like got a bucket, filled it some, squirted some in twice... and dunked my head in after trying to figure out if this was right or not, i just started washing myself with the diluted liquid i've created.... my body felt all minty ^_^ it was fun but i need to know how to actually do this lol someone help me out?
that works fine isnt the mint yummy? you can also mix it in an empty shampoo or drink bottle. i dilute it 1:10 or so. you dont need very much of it and you dont necessarily need to make a lather. my rule is, if the mint oils hurt my eyes, it needs to be diluted lol
wow thank you guys for the help =3 and yes the mint is quite nice. it felt like i was chewing gum. except with my entire body o.o thanks again for the help so far~ i'll be getting my dreads tomorrow =O i'll try to post pictures. i dunno if my face is very compatible with dreads ~_~ but i guess this should be an interesting experience
uhh what a disaster ~_~ i started mine today and only finished like 10 dreads and then ended up running out of time..... anyhow over half my head is still not dreaded ^_^;; i just wanted a check-up on my progress...... 'cause the dreads don't look very.. dready... i guess... i mean... i guess it's just 'cause it's just the first day.. i hope i'm worrying over nothing
your dreads will not look like dreads at day one. your dreads will start looking like dreads around 6 months to a year, usually. take a deep breath and relax. dreads are not instant.
*sigh* alright 'cause right now it just looks like... hair. very tangled, normal hair... blspotjdapnhgaeoinhy0iantg0oaietg0ia
Haha don't worry. Your hair is gonna look funny for a while. No way would they ever look like dreads the first coupla' weeks... too loose. Once they begin to lock you'll look in the mirror one day and go "Shit! I have dreads!". It's a strange feeling. lol And if you ever start panicking over them falling out at any point remember that backcombed dreads 90% of the time will probably fall loose or completely out in the beginning.. but then they'll tangle and lock up the way they want to in time. So just enjoy the ride =P
i'm kinda worried. i don't think i can finish all these dreads tonight i still have hw.... and i didn't put anything in my hair to tidy em up... i'm gonna be ridiculed at school, aren't i? =/
if you're worried about getting laughed at for tangled hair, maybe now isn't the time for dreads. your hair is going to look bad for probably a year before it looks like real, mature dreads because it takes that long to form real, mature dreads.
Agreed. Dreads should be something to free you from that cage, not another thing you gotta worry if "it looks good"
