... to take a ball cap, cut out the back panels of the hat, and knit a tamish sorts of net onto the back, to hold rather large dreads?

I have me faithful ball cap but want it to be a mix between a tam and a ball cap basically. Is it possible with knitting?

Hmmm ... I do see what you are saying and where you are going withthis idea. I will have to think a bit more, but yes I think maybe it could be done. Sort of an AppleJack hat! It would have to be crocheted. I will get back to you!!

Like that?? If you had dreads you would prolly want to make the actual hat part long, to accomodate the dreads....

This is the best that I could do for what I am thinking about....

I have thought about sewing a leather strip on the ball caps edges where I remove the back. Then I could use an awl to make some holes to work with.

I might even find another cap and do a "tester" before I use my hat, I was thinking I could probally macrame some sort of hemp "net" onto it also.... since I already know macrame. Be nice if the whole thing was done josephine style... but I am too lazy to put that much effort into it right now [IMG] Can't go without my hat too long as it is getting sunny!!!

Having problems thinking of how I would do the bottom of it if I did macrame something.

would probably be easier to crochet it rather than knit it.

It could be easily knit. All you need to do is figure out the shape you will need to end up with and knit a piece of fabric in that shape to sew on...

Since it is the back half of the hat, just make 1/2 of a tam. There are knit tam patterns out there....
